Feed Recipe - Not Sure How Much Of What...

Chris, thanks for the suggestion. I will compare the nutritional content of barley, millet and spelt. I think fish meal is a good idea except they do get table scraps which regularly consist of fish because my DH likes to go fishing. Looks like two started laying and have nice hard shells with dark yellow/orange yolks the past couple of days so they seem to be getting lots of what they need. I want to keep this up and do what's best for them.

Sorry for being so slow to get back here. My girls love the new feed. I withheld their treats for a few days since they wanted to fling the feed everywhere. They cleaned it up pretty good and I've not seen any wasted feed since. I really like it and I'm glad I had it made for them.

I've been trying to get someone local to go halves with me. I finally found someone. I didn't want to buy a ton of feed and get stuck with feed they wouldn't eat. So, I will be getting mine mixed next week! The guy I have going halves with me is thrilled not to be spending $15-16 per 50# and as long as they all eat it, he's switching permanently.

I hate to say this but your neighbors are hindering your chicken progress. The law is on your side in PA if a dog or any animal worries your livestock. You are allowed to shoot them.

My concern would also be the side effects from GMO corn. There has been a lot of talk about how the scientists do not know what the side effects of this genetically engineered grain can do. I want to stay away from it if at all possible. Hostetlers in Buffalo, MO have a feed for chickens that is GMO free but not organic but it costs $14.00 a 50 lb bag. A little costly when we have over 100 poultry on the place.

I have bright orange yokes and I do not free range due to predators flying above. I keep layer feed out all of the time, I also feed table scraps every a.m. and in the evening I pick a basket of clover and grass to feed as a treat. Some days I skip the grass and dig up earth worms. That is all I do and my chickens are happy and healthy.

My poultry all free range but I still put out layer and they get vegetables scraps as treats. They come running as soon as they hear the back door open. They love watermelon. I would seriously like to cut the cost of feed down though.

Get a Moringa tree!~They are VERY fast growing (research Moringa) Chickens love it and your yolks will be deep orange Full of nutrients also check out YouTube on how easy it is to raise mealworms my girls LOVE em! Plus it a great way to up protien levels for them and feed them fresh food. They also love scrambled eggs which people tell me is wrong on so many levels but actually it is a chicks first food (yolk) so I see it as natural.
