Feeding a weanling foal?

I want to keep my baby at pasture, but if iam unable to what should I feed it? Or what should i include along with grass?

Your foal will eat what the mom eats. Alfalfa and grain.

Should have specified. I have a foal coming to ME, I dont have the dam. I dont have other horses yet either- but I plan on getting a pasture pet shortly before baby comes home in Sep.

The best thing is a specificly designed feed for foals. I use to feed one called Equine JR by Purina. It is complete and has what growing baby needs. Be sure to prvide plenty of good quality roughage such as coarse grass hay. Timothy or orchard would be my first choice. Steer clear of fine bermuda and alicia hay they can cause impaction colic!

I agree on feeding a feed made for foals like Equine Jr. I don't agree with the statement about bermuda and alicia hay causing impaction. Both are a type of coastal hay. Many people feed coastal hay to their horses and have no problems. I feed only coastal hay and have for over 20 years and I've had no impaction problem. I know of only one horse that had an impaction problem and that was caused from the horse not drinking enough water. Everyone at the barn I'm at now and the one I was at in San Antonio, Texas have fed coastal hay and there has never been any problems. As long as it is a good horse quailty coastal hay you should be fine. Timothy and orchard grass hay are good types of hay. What you should do is find out what type of hay the foal is use to eat and stick with that type. The quick change in the type of hay is more likely to cause colic than the type of hay.

I'm in the process of weaning a baby. This is her 2nd week away from mama. She gets a scoop (approx 3 1/2 lbs) of Omolene 200 morning and night, bermuda/bahia hay free choice, and whatever pasture grass she wants throughout the day. She has not lost an ounce nor had any digestive issues.

You know what -- just ask the breeder you're buying him from. They can give you advice that works best for Friesians specifically. Not all horse types are alike (in their tolerance for departures from ideal early feeding regimes).
