Feeding chicks corn on cob

How long should they be on chick grit before switching to adult grit?

Well, you don’t always need to give them grit if they are going outside. Are you going to always keep them cooped up? I have sand in my chicken area, run and coop, so they don’t really need grit anymore because the sand works as grit.

No I’ve been letting mine free range while I’m in the yard. And they have a covered 8x16 run for when I’m not out. We have really rocky soil that they pick stuff out of.

Well, usually they don’t need grit then because they are getting plenty of it from the ground they are picking at. I just gave mine grit when they were little chicks.

What about mixing the two? Or offering both separately?

That works fine - I have 2 sizes of grit in a container since some of the birds prefer smaller grit.

Since you said you have rocky soil, as long as the birds can continue to access that you don't really need to supplement unless you want to. Some folks supplement in winter when snow and freeze makes the grit harder to access.
