feeding new chicks

I am tossed and need some advice. I am hatching only a doz chickens and only will be hatching every couple years so I don't want to buy a 50 lb bag of starter feed but the 10 lb bag is lower quality. Should I just spend the extra 10 bucks and waste 45 lb of feed.

any sugestions???

bugkiller: I usually feed my chicks the chick starter for the first few months, and used up a 50 lbs bag with no trouble. I fed this to them until I introduced them into the main coop-then I didnt want the laying hens eating it.
