Feeding Oats To Geese

I have 20% poultry pellets and I lessen the protein by adding some rolled oats and also cracked corn for the geese. I also add Brewer's Yeast for added niacin which I've read geese need.

Just curious. You are trying to reduce the protein content in the diet. You are adding Brewer's yeast for niacin. Do you have any idea of the protein content of the Brewer's yeast?

Clint,
What type/brand of brewers yeast are you using? I got some Diamond V YC from our local feed mill.

I don't use brewer's yeast. I use a gamebird food (20% protein) that doesn't require supplementation. As I've said before, I only deal with angel wing in muscovies in June-October, primarily, in my opinion because of the heart and lack of exercise (more productive than maintenance energy). If I had more time, I'd herd the birds and make sure they get enough exercise. I'd rather do that then change the nutritional balance of a diet. I never had problems in northern climates, but here in Louisiana, it's more of a problem.

All the Agways in our area closed up several years ago. I can get l6% poultry feed but its in crumbles not pellets and they seem to waste a lot more of it. That's why I have been buying the 20% pellets but watering the protein down with either oats or cracked corn. I did try the whole oats a month ago and the geese didn't like it at all and I don't have the time to sprout it.

I apologize for being a nuisance with my dumb questions and stupid conclusions, it must be very annoying for you with much more experience. I shall do more reading of others comments and less commenting in the future. Again my apologies.

Not sure if you were addressing me about the Brewer's Yeast Clint? The kind I use is NOW from pharmacy/vitamin store online its advertised as a "whole food", comes in llb tub and is debittered. Two tablespoons have 7 grams of protein. I sprinkle about that much on top of a large pan of their food when I pen them at night. It is manufactured as a daily supplement for humans but it was the fastest and cheapest way to buy it for me. Our feed store is rather limited in products and I didn't check with them as I didn't think they would have it.

ptwoody - He was responding to me. 2 Tablespoons per how much feed? I also bought a 1 lb tub awhile back from GNC but I wanted to see what the feed mill had to offer. For the stuff I got (from the feed mill)they say 4-5 ounces per 50lbs of feed. I will use it up to see the results...which will take awhile since I bought a 50lb bag.

Hi Ptwoody

It does sadden me to read this as I belive the purpose of the forum is to ask questions, share experiences and knowledge and hopefully forge some friendships. I wish I had a dollar for every 'dumb' question I've asked in my time! We all started somewhere and the forum should have members with a wide range of knowledge from beginners to those with a wealth of information.

Do keep asking your questions, especially about the welfare of your geese as Im sure many members wish to help you and indirectly - your birds. If you are having debates with other members then keep those to PMs or Emails, as I for one prefer not to see 'arguments' on such an excellent forum

Just to clarify, rolled oats are cooked in high pressure steam and flattened between rollers, so they won't sprout. Whole oats are the raw grain and sprout. They make excellent grazing grass, really, any cereal grain sprout will, rye, oats, wheat, barley.

Ah, not at all. I'm the king of dumb questions, trust me. It never stopped me from opening my mouth (well, using my fingers to type, anyway).

Ask away, we all learn that way.

2nd the "don't use seed oats" for feed or sprouting. It might be treated with anti-fungals, rodenticide, insecticide, or any number of other things.

However, I am watching the harvest reports and hope to get a 50 pound bag of cleaned and certified seed oats to plant as pasture grass for the geese. The certified seed has had the weed seeds removed and that has been verified by an independent agency. I don't want a pasture full of weeds. (Believe me, this seed costs a heck of a lot more than feed oats)

But I will get the whole feed oats for sprouting and hope the oats I buy were harvested fully ripe so they are mature enough to sprout.

In the past, I sprouted whole oats for my horses. So it works.

Seed has to be kept damp and the right temperature to sprout. If it dries out while it is sprouting, it's all over.
