Feeding really old cereal??

Ok, don't laugh ... or barf...

We were going through some boxes that were in the back of the basement today and found one with several Crispix cereal boxes in it. The boxes are dated 1999!

We don't see any worms in it but it does have a funny smell. We were going to just throw them out but my hubby is wondering if we can feed them to the chickens?

Any thoughts - I sure don't want to harm my girls. Is this a 'better safe than sorry' situation?

The old adage is if it not fit for you to eat it's not fit for your birds to eat. In my opinion toss it.

Bawkadoodle - I obviously didn't do a good job asking my question, or you think I'm brainless.

There is nothing rotting ... my husband even ate some. The only thing that made us question giving it to them was the slight, funny smell and the very small amount of sugar in cereal. It tastes normal, looks normal and is still crunchy.

If this had been one of my first posts here I may not have ever come back with that reply. Your answer really hurt me, I would never give my girls or any of my animals rotting anything. Thankfully I know most of the people here are much more thoughtful with their replies. If I've come across as that much of a dweeb with my questions and answers then I'll stop both.

Please think about how you answer questions in the future or you will drive newbies away.

Moderators - if I'm out of line here, I apologize. But to be told that I'm torturing my 'poor' girls and feeding them rotting food really upset me.

I didn't mean to hurt your feelings... it's just that usually foods from the last millennium seem to be categorized as old and rotting. again, sorry, i'll think twice about posting like this again.

And some foods don't go bad. I found a box of Hersey's cocao in the back of the cupboard. Looks like my mother must have bought in the thirties. There is a NRA stamp on it.

Well, I opened it and it looked ok. There was a cake recipe on the back of it. I made the cake with the cocoa and it turned out great.
