Feeding wheat or barley

They are the same. From what I understand, the blades of wheat grass are thinner than the barley grass blades and it is supposed to be easier to get wheat than barley. I did read just recently that if you are growing fodder, do not let the grass blades get any taller than a couple of inches. Any taller, they tend to lose nutritional value.

We sprout wheat for fodder and this time of year we grow it just a few days after soaking it. Wheat is much less expensive around us and much easier to grow. It is a late day treat which our chickens love.

I prefer barley in terms of ease to sprout. You should do a google search on the nutritional quality of these grains as fodder. I feed at the sprout stage, since that is when it is most nutritious.

Depending on flock size and how much sprouting you intend to do, you could buy a bag of each, and mix them. I called a rep for my local feed company and suggested that they market a sprouting mix for chickens. The stuff would sell like hot cakes.
