Feeding Wild Birds

The turkeys just came in, and they came in hungry. As the one young jake was eating from the feeder, the others were scrounging around looking for food. I went out with a pan of grain, and they just slowly walked away. As I threw out the feed, they came running like a flock of chickens. Hopefully they are only habituated to me.

I cleaned all the mice out of my blue bird houses yesterday. Every house had two or more mice inside. Pesky little rodents! I have six houses and had quite a few young all through the summer.
I saw a pair of Eastern bluebirds at my feeders and birdbath today. I suspect they were scouting for a nest location.

Not very clear, but my camera wasn't handy when I saw them.

Yesterday I noticed a tiny fledgling Laughing dove begging for food from the adult Laughing doves that were eating seeds that I had put out for them on the ground. I also noticed that none of the adults gave the little one any attention. I left them alone and went about my business indoors, thinking that the parents should be around somewhere. At about 4 o'clock in the afternoon I went to check and the little thing was still begging and looking a bit pathetic, so I caught it to find that its crop was empty. Yes, you probably guess it, I am now looking after it, as it will definitely become cat food if I had left it outside.
