Feeding Wild Birds

Female Rufus guarding her feeder. (I've got 5 feeders going, 3/4s of a gallon of hummer feed a day, 50 to 75 hummers.)

FINALLY! The Hummers are just about gone. Down to maybe a qt the past week. After going through over a 100 lbs of sugar this summer I've had enough. Thinking about buying stock in Domino.

I have never seen a hummingbird here before Aug. first or after Aug. 31st.

I've gone through over 60 lbs. of sugar but it went into jams and jellies.

It's been crazy here too, I am also growing weary. I was using 6, 3 cup feeders filling every day at peak. I'm down to 3 feeders now. I long for the day there is only 1 feeder out there and 2 hummers. 😂

Today a flock of 9 hens showed up at the home feeder. I think they were birds from last year as they were not scared of me. The bearded hen was not with them. A lot of skirmishing going on so they may have just started flocking together. The five hens and fifteen poults showed up together yesterday also with a lot of skirmishing and chasing going on. Today they came in separately.

The sparrows and starlings love sleeping in the tree in our backyard. In the evening every night there is a VERY loud chirping session as they settle in. This evening I was stepping out of the greenhouse and it went dead silent for about 5 seconds. Then every little soul getting ready for bed in that tree gushed out followed by a hawk with a stripped tail. It flew over to the neighbors yard who had just put his chickens away not even 2 minutes before that. Must’ve been stalking them?

No Grackles, Red Wing BB, or other feeder Hogs so I put the suet and filled the seed bin on the feeder. Juncos are the most numerous of the winter birds but aren't as hoggish as the spring birds. Hummingbirds have left and only see a stray on their way South. Only one qt feeder hanging about a 3rd full of sugar water for a quick snack for the late migraters and that will come down the end of Sept or when there is no more movement on syrup level. Be feeding nothing but Yellow Jackets soon.

There was still one female hummingbird hanging around this past week though I haven't paid attention the past couple of days. She was content to just come and perch at the feeder and rest between sips. That makes me think that most have already taken off since my feeder has been so competitive this year.
