Feeding Wild Birds

While watching Penn State/Ohio State football game there was a thud against the picture window. Went out to find a seriously stunned nuthatch. Things did not look good. I moved it to a chair on the porch so that Scaredy Cat would not find it. It seems to be coming around. Maybe it will be okay.

I don't think I've ever had a wild bird hit one of our windows but when I was a kid, I had a pet cockatiel and he occasionally would fly right in to the kitchen window thinking he could fly out. The one time, he did it good and there was a perfect outline of his head, crest, and wings on the nicely cleaned window lol. I think he dropped in to the sink and stumbled around a few minutes, said his name, and took off back to his cage lol. He was a silly bird.

It was raptor day at the beagle club. I spent time watching 3 turkey buzzards soaring along the ridge at the bottom of the club. Then I saw a female redtail that is about 75% white. She's been wintering in the area for several years, but this is the most white she has become. And then I saw the male Cooper's hawk that hunts the rabbit feeders for voles. He also has been wintering at the club for several years. He's pretty much habituated to me. The redtail - not so much.

This morning there was an immature bald eagle sitting where the adult was yesterday. Bald eagles are relatively uncommon here as we are a distance from the Delaware River and Round Valley reservoir. I stopped to check on my way out, and the eagle flew East. As it passed a hedgerow, an explosion of crows happened. I walked over there and found the carcass of a yearling deer. I've been noticing an unhealthy deer the past several weeks, and she must have died.
