Feeding Wild Birds

Weather is usually the culprit with wild turkeys.

We did have a wet chilly Spring, I think you're on to something there. I never had any interest in Turkey Hunting so never really took the time to study their habits, thanks.

Adios Ruby! Humming Birds thinning quickly. Went from over a gallon of syrup a day to them just hanging for a Grab and Go going South. As they empty each feeder I'll take it down for the season.

Similar situation here. I’m only seeing one bird, not the fights between two or three like I was. A few more weeks and their feeder is coming down whether it’s empty or not.

Speaking of, I need to remember to make up a batch of suet to replace it with.

I have two semi-feral outside cats. I feed them, and they thank me by keeping other cats and those having kittens out of my yard. They also catch mice, voles, moles, and shrews. And occasionally birds.

Today I finished blocking the area around one of my bird feeder stations as Alice has been using it as a buffet.

The feeder area is now completely enclosed with fencing. Most is about 36" high, but the fencing I used to finish is about 16" high. Technically the cats can leap over it, but it should spoil the element of surprise, and give the birds a better chance.

I also placed a bent section of wire fence outside the barrier, making another difficulty for the cats to overcome.

I put out a new feeder today to hold BSFL. I want more insectivorous birds around my veggies!

Feral cats are indeed a problem Thankfully Scaredy has aged to the point where she only catches the occasional vole or deer mouse.

The pigeons are back. It's not my intention to feed them, but I do, and quite a lot at that.

Let me introduce myself to this thread. My name is Gillian but I go by Gill-b. I live in a residential area and I have two hanging bird feeders. The hanging bird feeder that is at the front of the house is a double decker and has easy access for most bird types, including doves and pigeons. The bird feeder that is in the back yard is more for smaller birds.

This morning I am a little bit excited because the Guinea Pigeons that are nesting here, hatched two chicks sometime during the last 24 hours.

[As I have mentioned before in another thread, most people discourage Guinea Pigeons from nesting on their properties just as they do with the Feral Pigeons, but I have a soft spot for birds so I have allowed a pair of Guinea Pigeons to nest here, however I do regulate their producing of offspring. I also check the offspring for health and parasites; and take the necessary action to ensure a healthy environment for all of us.]

On Friday I saw a Southern Red Bishop bird on the front bird feeder. It took me by surprise as I have not seen one for some time (and in full breeding colour with its plumage) so I only had my small point-and-shoot camera on hand to take pictures; through a dirty window, I will add.
