We went and bought some coyote snares to put aorund the property as we have lost so many cats, ducks and chickens to them lately. Well they have been up for a week a nothing. The other night around 10 pm I heard a dog screaming/crying. DH figured it was a coyote in the snare. I know coyotes won't scream like that if they get caught, they usually arfe very quiet trying not to draw attention. I figured it was the neighbours dog, it is chained up and sometime howls and such. Well DH went out and checks his snares, he had caught a stray dog, one that had been after the chickens at one time, and the coyotes got to him before DH did. They left nothing but some hid and his head. DH got yelled at for that one, he wasen't checking the snares often enough, and I told him we did not buy them so we could feed the freaking coyotes. I just felt bad about the dog, I know he was a stray, looked like a pitbull/shepherd cross, and we would have to have shot him beings he was wild, but he shouldn't have had to go the way he did.

Agreed. Can't you use a coop and run? Do they have to free range? We have coyotes and I would never dream of killing them just to protect my chickens and ducks, when protecting them is just a matter of locking them up tightly and behind the right fencing.

I agree. We dont need to kill everything to protect our chickens, just lock them up!

Thats a whole nother thread......

But I am sorry you are feeling sad. I have been there too. It is a yucky feeling.

I have 10 fully fenced acres and can't keep them out. The ones here are crossed with dogs, so they don't care if they stroll up and down my driveway in the middle of the day. They have killed many of my cats, now this dog, a neighbours full grown ram, and lots of my ducks and chickens. I have no sympathy for coyotes. The snare I am using are just holding snares, not killing snares, those are not legal here as I see it. In this area, Vancouver Bc, people have even had their children attacked by them, so I don't want them in my area.
