I'm just curious...how did you know it was feral? I'm guessing that you had no idea, just saw a cat walking towards the coop and decided that you would kill it.
I'm not questioning your right to do this as it is, unfortunately, perfectly legal in most places. What I am questioning is the moral and ethical correctness of killing something in a knee-jerk reaction to a possibly ill-perceived threat and then rallying others to do so also. The way I read the original post it struck me as more than a bit angry and almost gloating. There are many animal lovers on this site and more animal rescue volunteers than you may realize. This sort of post is one we have seen before and I'm surprised that more of the 'tree huggers' have not come out and voiced their concern. There seems to be two camps on BYC regarding this topic and they are not budging on their stand.
My experience is that a cat will not take down a full grown hen. I've had many 'ferals' wander through the yard and among the flock and never had a problem. Most are just lost or abandoned and I've rescued 3 so far this year and all are happily rehomed.
I really have nothing more to add to this conversation as I've (and others) have rehashed this debate over and over. I would ask though, that you consider the opinions of others as possibly having merit and not just dismiss them as the whining of tree hugging bleeding hearts. We try to keep this site a constructive and supportive place.

God bless.

Some of you are blowing this way out of proportion.

I was protecting my flock. There was no cloar on the feral cat. It posed a threat and I neutralized that threat.

Whats so bad about that.

Some of you can spay and neuter all you want but that cat is still going to kill native anmals. Like the birds on your feeders or the rabbits in your bushes. I personally enjoy all the native critters on my property and getting rid of every feral cat in sight has made a huge difference. I counted six rabbits in my front yard at one time. That was alot better seeing one and being lucky to see two.

Shepard, You and I think along the same lines... my chickens and livestock stay on my property and any and all intruders are dealt with where I won't have to worry about them destroying what is mine. No descrimination on my part- feral or wild predators all get the same treatment!

Ohhhh! This is a real hot topic. Personally, I dislike cats, but my wife loves them. I understand that you must sometimes take measures to protect your property, but this should be done discretely. The sheriff in my county is a real cat lover, and for the record, I would never harm or cause pain or distress to any feline.

personally I shoot every predatory species that don't belong here (if I don't then the dogs will take care of it)... some people like to take chances with their animals, I don't.

if you care about your pets, do your best to keep it IN YOUR OWN PROPERTY.

I agree totally with Shepard, as i have mentioned i have a pet cat, i like cats. However, when a cat takes out my food source,i need to protect that food source.Spay and neutering cats and releasing them is fine for controling more births of homeless cats, but doesn't stop the fixed cat from continued killing of livestock, etc...Releasing a fixed cat does not solve the problem of a chicken killing cat. I see cats fairly often around my property, some feral, some not.I give each one a chance,if i see one particular cat that is always near my coop or chickens, that cat gets my attention, i can't afford to lose any more hens this way.I often remove raccoons,as they are always trying to get my hens.As a keeper of livestock it is my responsibilty to protect my livestock from ANY predator,or i shoudn't have livestock...
