Feral cat!

Please do not think I am defending feral cats, I am not. If feral cat people are going to trap/fix/release then they have to release the cats where they were taken from. It doesn't work if they release them in another area. It is irresponsible on their part, and they are making it worse on the place where they are dumping the cats. You have every reason to SSS!

I'll speak on behalf of the feral cats. I adopted 2 from an organization that spays and neuters them and finds them barn homes. They live in the barn with my chickens. My chickens free range all day and some sleep loose in the barn at night. I even have 13 tiny chicks that were abandoned by mama hen at 3 weeks. They free range all alone in their little group. The cats have not so much as sniffed them.

My 2 house cats hunt the woods around me. They bring me back squirrels, chipmonks rabbits and recently a rat! I see them watching the chickens the same way they watch deer and turkey in the yard. They never bother them.

I guess I have the good cats.

that is possible, we have a stray live in our pigeon loft for 4 years, over here they are allowed to walk, but once the stalked, they're gone.

"Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens" by Gail Damerow, suggests having a barn/coop cat to keep down the population of mice/rats. I have four house cats that are good mousers, but they would go after the chickens. I am thinking about getting a rescue kitten that would stay out in the coop with the chickens. He/she would have its own bed apart from the coop section. (if it didn't work out, my husband will be mad because I would want to bring the cat in the house!!)

Thank you so much, everyone!

Thank goodness, I have not seen this cat since. I'll keep my eyes open. I'll be more vigilant with my chickens.

Until recently, I never would have thought a cat could or would harm any of my ducks but now I've changed my mind. I had a stray cat take one of my female runners in broad daylight.

I hate to do it but if the live trap dosen't get her first, my gun will.

I agree "one" good barn cat is good to have around if its spayed or neuterd but domestic cats just kill for the fun of killing and thats not o.k., I would much rather look out my window and see rabbits, squirrels, guail, etc. than see a stinking cat squatted next to the woods waiting to kill its next victim just for the fun of it. wild life is cool
