Feral Hawaiian chickens laying a dozen eggs a day

Definitely don't take anything for granted; given the rest of the article, anything is possible.

I'm glad people wrote the newspaper and the writer; but I have to wonder if they are interested in setting the record straight.

Then again, maybe these are alien chickens from outer space.

Love that pic!!

One bureaucrat steps in chicken poop and the war is on. You have to love government. Don't worry about the truth; the end justifies the means.

Oh good grief what a bunch of chicken poo. I thought the dingbats were confined to the continental states...guess they can swim. I cannot post my email to them because it was not child friendly. They really should be mortified over their stupidity.

What a bunch of hooey! I sent him an email and told him when he found chickens that would lay a dozen eggs a day we would ship them off to Haiti and solve the hunger problem there! Big dummy! Lol!! What kind of reporter writes that crap without first checking out his facts first!?

It sounds as if the journalist was merely quoting information he/she got from the local Humane Society spokesperson. Perhaps they should have done more to verify that information. But I remember not knowing much about chickens before I ever started keeping them, so that information would have seemed plausible to me back then. This is what I wrote to the journalist:

Someone posted your article on http://www.BackYardChickens.com/forum There is an enormous community of knowledgeable & helpful poultry keepers there. Perhaps your local Humane Society could find some useful information to help them learn how to capture & care for the feral chicken population. I would suggest they change their policy on adopting out sterilized animals when it comes to the chickens, it's difficult if not impossible to do the operation on adult chickens. And I don't know what kind of pests you have out there, but most folks can easily rid their chickens of lice & mites by simply dusting them with a mild insecticidal powder like 5% Sevin Dust.

Our domestic chickens are descendants of a bird that lives in the jungle, so I imagine that your feral chickens are very comfortable "going native" again in Hawaii. I agree that it is a concern that these chickens might start growing in numbers and edging out the native species. Your local authorities should try to learn more about keeping chickens, especially how to lure them out of the woods where they can capture & confine them. Then they can easily limit their population growth by keeping the hens separate from the roosters, or by collecting all the eggs laid every day. There are also ways that these smaller game-type chickens can be cooked that makes them tender & delicious.

LOL...

The "not child friendly" email is just as outlandish as the original post! Spare me the automatic censor, please.....
