FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

Poofy! Sounds like it's maybe more fresh and has some good ingredients going on!
 
I think that switching feed brands is a great solution to try. I have been switching a lot. I have noticed that some kinds are better than others. Right now the poops are solid enough that you can pretty much sweep them.

I have a large feed bag draped over a bale of straw on its end in my coop. The birds love to roost on it. So of course they poop a lot on it. I'm able to just tilt the bag and the poop just rolls right off of it. No residue from their poops. I still get the occasional cecal poops but haven't on the bag over the straw. I definitely count the solid poo as one of the main benefits of FF.
 
Trying different feed brands can always be a good idea whether using FF or dry. That said, I can't imagine that one brand would cause a soupy mix and another not if using the same amount of water. Most feeds have a very similar blend of grains. I saved my analysis/ingredient labels from all the feeds I've bought. Looking at several of them now. They all start with ground corn, then in varying order they usually have soy, barley, oats, etc.. Some will have fish meal, porcine meal, alfalfa meal. After that, come the other nutrients - vitamins, minerals, additional proteins and fats. In spite of them being a varied blend, I can't imagine what would make one soupier than another.

I think the big variable is the age of the feed (processing date) and how finely ground the ingredients are.
 
Hmm. I've always used crumbles. Are the majority of you folks using pellets who are graced with "fluffy" FF and poops that can be "swept" away? Perhaps that is the critical distinction?

A week ago I bought some Purina Flock Raiser and I can't get it to the same consistency as the MG feeds I usually use. It makes a paste that is difficult to spoon out. I don't know what the difference is but there is something different about it.

Crumbles are pellets that have been run through the crumbler after leaving the pelletizer in the assembly line.

Perhaps the difference is the bonding agent used to form the pellet.
 
Well then, that could explain at least some of the problem. I use Purina Flock Raiser crumbles. Heading to town this morning on my twice a month excursion off the mountain. I'll see if the feed store has an alternative.
