FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

When I cut the scapes off the garlic in spring, I set they aside and most develop plump bulbils.
I strip them off the stalks in fall and sprinkle them out for the chooks in winter.

One thing about garlic to remember....feed in moderation. I wouldn't make garlic a daily intake for the chickens unless it's in little amounts..don't go hog wild with it. Regular intake of garlic can lead to some pretty thin blood that doesn't clot easily. So, say your chickens are already bleeding from the butt like so many are doing on BYC~in the form of coccidiosis~and you start feeding garlic as a cure for it, it just may backfire. Maybe not, but maybe so. Can't say for sure.

I know this personally because garlic is in regular use here and I bleed like crazy any time I'm wounded..even a tiny wound... and it takes forever to clot. Same goes for my mother. Garlic has been used as a natural blood thinner down through the ages and it hasn't changed.

That's good to know. I had no idea. I'll definitely keep that in mind.

First off, congrats SG on your pregnancy. You're almost to the finish line... and you're just now getting around to telling us about it???

Second, thanks for sharing the info re: garlic as a digestive aid. Without going into a lot of details, I think I'll work on trying to get some garlic into my GD's diet. She loves yogurt, but could use something to "mobilize" her!

Third, thanks Bee for the timely reminder of the blood thinning properties of garlic.

Aart: I leave the scapes on my garlic, and let those bulbils mature, then plant them where I want a new stand of garlic. This year, I put a bunch of them around the new trees in my orchard. But, I fear that the chickens dug them up just about as fast as I planted them.

Thank you @lazy gardener, but I actually just found out! ;)

That BTE garden is going to be timed perfectly lol, I'll be due at harvest :D

Thanks @Beekissed for reminding us not to overdo the garlic as well... I give mine theirs about every 2 weeks lately, it seems that winter is making it harder on their digestion, and I'm thinking it's because their supply of fresh legumes aren't there to help the probiotics, so I had to try what helped me, because they actually taught me about fixing my own problem through the fermenting.

Or I should say you did, bee ;)

I picked your brain back in the canning thread and you reminded me about how my folks used to ferment to store food, then I ran across a fermenting thread on a permaculture site, and it led me right back to here ;)

15 years of IBS, Chrohns, allergies to everything I ate, couldn't get my weight over 115.. 3 months of fermenting everything in sight and not only do I now save a bunch on my feed bill, but my digestive issues are GONE, and I'm healthy enough to actually be pregnant!

God works in mysterious ways, thanks bee ;)

Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!!!!

Wow! Just.... WOW! I'm singing praises from the roof top. Well, maybe not singing. I don't sing.... it's more like croaking. But I do make a joyful noise, and send praise and glory to God. May He bless your little one with wonderful health. May your child grow up to become a mighty warrior of God!

Awww, thank you so much ladies! :)

Shocking, for sure ha-ha; DH is in his 50s, so he's really questioning the pints of pickled garlic that he loves so much lol ;)

I feel bad for sidetracking off the subject.... :p

So just to stay with topic, someone mentioned flock blocks.. Well, THIS is how Colorado people do flock blocks in winter lol... This was not a intentional BTW ;)

400

It froze! :p

I couldn't get DH to let me bring it in, so while in the process of finding a small tank heater and starting a new batch in a 55 gallon drum, ( thanks @COChix for the idea) I forgot I had a 5 gallon bucket of FF that was a solid chunk.

I needed the bucket ;)
