I remember my grandmother's house in rural Nebraska had a party line and it took forever for my mom to explain it to me.. as a small child, I just could not understand it. Then I found out other people listened in. Remember when Long Distance was uber-expensive and for emergencies only? Lol.

All mine have filters for DSL too, including the rotary-which I keep mostly for the sound of the bell ringer.

Our party line was ring ring, quickly one after another. If it went ring ring ring, slowly. That was the other household that shared our line. Many times they would quietly pick up their phone after we answered our ring ring and listen to our conversation. GC

You beat me to it!!! Yes, nothing like having to listen to other people's dirty laundry being aired in public.

So... back to FF: My birds are eating less now. Jap beetles have arrived. I have an ammonia bottle set aside to make a brand new catch trap so the birds can bob for beetles.
