Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

It would probably slow things down a bit if we would prosecute the *owner* for whatever crime the dog committed. Maybe one 'level' down. Like, if your dog kills someone, you have to be charged with a minimum of manslaughter. Maiming, assault and battery with intent to kill. That sort of thing. We need to put the responsibility with the owner. If your dog is turning mean because the neighbor kids are taunting it, why do you leave the dog alone and unprotected like that? A trained gaurd animal wouldn't 'turn mean' because they'd be smarter than the taunting kids. And if you can prove kids are throwing rocks, well, if they broke a window, they could be charged with criminal mischief. Charge 'em, prosecute, punish (worked on my brother, spent an entire summer mucking stalls for restitution. Never broke in anywhere ever again). 'Course, my mom backed the whole thing to the hilt, not one of those "oh, not MY son" poor excuses for a parent... when he got home from mucking stalls, he had to go pick up trash in the neighborhood until dinner time, then homework, then more trash pick up until bed time. Heck, *I* never forgot that lesson. Made a heck of an impression on the neighbor kids too. Anyway, can you tell I'm big on personal responsibility?
(And, I have a rescued mix that was *trained* to *eat* cats. So he is NEVER off a leash or outside a fence. 'cause *I* am responsible for him.)

Now THAT'S a mama! That's probably about what mine would have done ...if she didn't beat me to death.

Hey Bee,

Think Bud could use one of these?

Too small for a coop but wouldn't that make a perfect broody pen if all the small nooks and crannies were fenced off? I saw a pic once of a school bus someone had buried up to the windows, leaving the front of the bus free of soil, and turned it into a coop. It was insulated, has tons of windows for ventilation~though I would have piped in some ventilation at the floor level, and it was nigh pred proof.

I know chickens don't normally have red eyes but BUD doesn't seem real normal anyhow. LOL I've seen rabbits with red eyes and they are a tad freaky to me!

Yes...I agree..BUD is just not quite normal. But you'll all be pleased to know he is getting some good weight on him and his tail is trying to grow in...just in time for processing. We'll be canning up all the chickens I killed earlier and the ones I will kill soon so we can have plenty of soup this winter. Nothing better than homemade chicken soup from real chickens..not those mushy, tasteless things from the store.

All in all, we will can up 8 whole birds and some of the stock will be canned in the meat jars and also separately, without meat. It will feel good to have some meat in the jar. Then we hope to can up a deer soon also. Meat for stew, soups, creamed in noodles, stir fry, gravy, etc....YUM. So many things to use if for.

Sounds good! I have a couple roos I may kill. Also all these rabbits that have been hanging around here all summer better be careful, along with the squirrels. I'll probably trap them then cap them in the head - beats chewing on buckshot. Rabbits were practically running over me all summer long and now they are hid out. Smart critters! Deer are running like crazy. Hunters have got them on the move. One year in a town not real far from here a deer was shot, hit by a car or something and went on a tear through that town. It finally walked in a little supermarket, walked to the back of the store and died in front of the meat department. Sad but funny too. lol

lol What kind of dog is it? (My dogs would kill my whole flock given the chance!)

shes a staffordshire bull terrier crossed with a black & white sheep dog, supposed to be labrador in there too, but doesnt have the bottomless stomach. We got her from a pet shop, last of her litter, so theyd put kittens in with her to keep her company. She has a vocal opininated staffy sense of humor with the collie smarts. Figured out the chooks were mine and she doesnt like it when im cross with her. Of course every sparrow, pigron or tui that fliits through the garden gets sent packing.
Last dog decimated the flock and bit people, we got this one to heal little kid broken hearts, lucky us.

They could put an end to all that with a law that says after one complaint a dog must be assessed for aggressiveness by an expert, like they do at the pound before releasing a dog up for adoption.  If he is found to be "bad" he must be put down.  Eventually the streets would be rid of the bad ones and hopefully people would stop breeding that kind. Then those of us with good dogs will be left in peace.  And a dog that attacks, goes down period.  I know some sick people like to antagonize dogs to make them throw themselves at the fence then, one day someone leaves the fence not well closed and he walks by.  The fool is at fault but the dog must be put down.  It sickens me when I hear the stories of dogs "snapping" and turning on masters and children or strangers.  I guess its that bad gene pool and I was just lucky?  My son has had 3 and they were all so smart and easily trained.  You'd be amazed at how many separate commands they know!

We were given a failed show dog as a pet. She was an english pointer, , Gorgeous, loving but completely neurotic. I had dog phsych come to give me clues... she was just broken. Ate my hens, nipped people and nailed my 5yr old who walked past looking for her shoes whilst olive had a bone. She had never been socialised and if I had realised ehat her life had been like uo till then I would have known it couldnt work. Much later I heard her mother had been the same. Irresponsible people breeding for looks not temperament.
We put her down . Everyone cried but the relief was huge.

I have a question for you guys. When you kill your birds and rest them, how do you rest them- in bags, etc? Will sitting in water work or what? The roosters (Australorps) I killed a few months ago turned out tough. They were about 20 weeks old, rested about 3-4 days sitting in bowls of water. Maybe 20 weeks is too long? They tasted real gamey, to me just like squirrel or rabbit.

Around here they have a two strikes policy for any dog bite, even the smallest. If it gets reported, it goes on the dog's record. I know this because we had a dog that was unfortunate enough to be taunted into lashing out at a child twice.

Understand, I totally agree that owners should be held responsible. If this dog had an actual mean bone in his body, he'd have been invited to cross Rainbow Bridge early. He really was a sweet dog... but in two incidents, separated by about six years, he snapped in self defense and put a small puncture wound on the top of a child's head.

The first time he was outside with my son, who was about eight at the time. There was a neighbor child who was trying to ride the dog, and my son was trying to tell him to stop, but the kid wouldn't stop. So the dog snapped just as my son was running into the house to get me to stop the kid. The parents of the child, from two yards away, saw it happen, and took their kid to the ER in case the dog was rabid or something. The wound didn't need stitches or any kind of treatment except washing, I suppose. In that case the parents apologized for their son's behavior and told him straight up he caused the bite. I think he was grounded for a couple days too.

The second time I was babysitting the son of a friend. For some mysterious reason she couldn't find anyone to babysit him! LOL. THAT should have been a clue...
He was here about five hours. He was supposed to be here only two hours. And before the two hours were up already I'd caught the little sociopath behind the couch choking one of our kittens. I tried to call his mom to come get him, but of course she wasn't answering her phone... Because of his prior history I had the dog in our bedroom, with the door closed. Should have been safe there, right?

As it turned out, not so much. :(
See, mom was very late picking the little @$$hole up. And my son was trying to get his stuff packed to go to State Fair with his 4H club. My son's 4H leader was picking him up that afternoon. In the crunch of trying to help my son pack, I lost sight of the little monster for maybe five minutes. Suddenly I heard the dog yelp, and then the kid screamed bloody murder.

The kid's story was that he just opened the door a crack to look at the dog. The dog he'd been specifically told not to bother. Supposedly the dog - completely unprovoked - leapt up at him and bit him for nothing!!! Right in the center of the crown of his head. A medium small dog somehow was able to do that to a four and a half foot tall kid who was supposedly standing straight up? In one leap, with no other marks on the kid? And what made the dog yelp? I didn't buy it, and neither did animal control. But the kid's mother bought the story hook line and sinker. She wanted us to put the dog down. Because of course her little angel would never ever hurt a fly. Even though it turned out animal mistreatment was the reason the kid wasn't welcome anywhere. (and again, tiny puncture wound, barely visible)

Turned out the kid had had a few people make complaints about him to animal control. At 8 years old every prior incident had been chalked up to being a wild kid. But there was no leeway and we would either have to keep the dog behind a 5 foot fence or have him put down. We did neither. We sent the dog back to live with my stepson, because he was his dog in the first place! (stepson was always leaving the dog with us for "just a few weeks" which would stretch on and on...)

Anyhow, I agree, owner responsibility is key. And around here that's the only way they'll play it. Because unless the abuse is bad enough and has enough evidence to bring criminal charges against the abuser, they don't blame anyone but the owner.

LOL, BUD is the closest thing to a resurrected 'frankenchicken' I think that's ever been. He crossed the line...
about what, a month ago? Try looking up 'cane' and attack in the search function, probably can find the whole sordid saga. :)

I did try to ;look it up, can't find it. It brought me right back to here. :(
