Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I got two LED headlamps for Christmas and have yet to try them on a night run to the coop, but they seem pretty bright. I'll report on the effectiveness...if they work, this will really revolutionize my examination of birds. The flashlight in the mouth will be passe!

Man, that sucks. I remember some of the fires last year, and I remember this one girl here on BYC that converted an old car into a chicken coop... Which turned out to be really convenient when she had to evacuate! She drove to the evacuation center in a car filled with Red Ranger meat chicks! Kinda crazy, huh?
Not crazy at all... I am hoping to eventually trade in my Regular two horse trailer for a stock trailer. Then there will be partitions made for my livestock....

I think I could do it with a four horse. Horse over the wheels Goat partition Chicken partition Cats and dogs (if I have any will go in cages or crates in the back of the truck.

When i bought my horse trailer I only had the horse and my dog.... wasnt thinking forward. Plus a stock trailer can be used for soo much more.... Hauling furniture... garbage.... wood... Youcan even live in them if you make a peeple partition....

That's been the food choices in our family for generations! Take it or leave it was the choice, with a side option of "If you throw that up, you will eat that too!"

Off in the distance there are faint sounds of steel drums and laughter as a warm, tropical breeze~faintly tainted with the smell of FF~drifts across the room.....sadly, once again TW was left behind for the yearly FF Conference Cruise. All she can see are the distant figures of women standing on a deck waving as they sip fruity umbrella drinks, the white, foamy wake unfurling behind the ship mocking her as she stands there on the dock in her Bermuda shorts, black socks and sandals. Dang it! She had plans to win the loudest PJ pants competition this year!

Sigh.
sigh that sounds LOVELY and soooo peaceful and restful. :)

so i ran out of FF for a couple days (had afew days of from work and forgot to buy more supplies before, somehow thought they'd last lol) so for now im wetting a handful of horse grain with their scratch to keep it interesting... as i now have supplies but i started a project in their trash bin... so ill probably need to do a few small batches while this "ripens" i was cleaning out the "cold room" and found a lot of the pumpkins and squash was a bit soft, also some meaty gourds.... anyway everything got cut in half or a few holes popped in it, i also threw in a bunch of stale flour, the last bit of BOSS and i started slowly throwing grains in... i noticed tonight that its actually generating heat

bizarre... i started slowing adding alfalfa to it, i need to sink those squash lol .... but its quite bubbly and already has a light fermented smell.... benefit of using pre-self-fermented veggies

im excited to see what this will be like in a week.... i like having good way to recycle veggies when its not practical to feed them fresh cause they will freeze... im gunna have fat happy birds for the month or so that this 20 gallon trash bin lasts them :) (makes my wish i had 2 though so i could use up all my dry bags and have a more powerful ferment)

oh and i grabbed some game fish feed to up my protein as after doing my math its actually pretty low
hmm.png
(16% alfalfa 7% whole corn 8.5 scratch 14% BOSS) the fish feed is 38% so ill be adding a little to each batch.... but idk how to properly calculate what it is, if in equal parts right now its 11% and a little, i know it must be slightly more than that as the alfalfa takes up a greater percentage, i add equal parts scratch and corn, and a splash of Boss, half has much or a little less, about 20lbs lasts me a month if its colder and i add an extra handful before i take it out, but its probably a 2 month supply (the 20lbs) sometimes ill add a mix of birdseed but the % is still only around 7% and its not "added" its substituted and i trim off the other grains... i imagine ill be adding the protein at about the same rate as the BOSS for maintenance ...

I really want to know how to properly calculate it as im going to be making chick starter soon (last year i just bought it but id like to do an experiment this year with starting half on the store stuff and half on homemade, then next year instead of a homemade mix, ill test out "home grown" :)

That was so true for our family...'If you spit that up, you will eat it again'.
