Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I've been thinking a bit about feed lately. Currently my girls (6) get free choice layer ration and about a half pound of fodder every day. I think I would like to switch them over to ff and sprouts. I'm probably going to make them too fat to lay!

Your birds will love it and you will be glad you made the change.

Mike got home from work last night before I did, and checked on the frost bite layer. Her foot fell off when he picked her up. He completed her journey immediately. No sense in making her wait any longer.

The CX are voracious little buggers. They have tripled in size since last Sunday when we got them. I am guessing that they will be two weeks old on Monday. All the feed stores here get their chicks on Tuesday. I got them on Sunday so I was figuring them to be about a week old when we got them. I will keep them on free feed 24 hours a day for another week, then cut it back to 2-3 times a day. They are getting some dry chick starter, then I heap the ff on top.

The layers got their first bowl of ff today. We are driving out of town today and we will be pricing some whole grains while down south. There are some grain mills in the area we are going. At the feed stores here the prices are pretty much the same for whole grains as it is for chicken feed. $14.99 for 40# layer pellets, and $13.99 for 50# of corn, oats, or barley. I would like to find the whole grains at $10 for 50#. We also have the ability to bring in the large tote bags. If I can find them. I would do the dry peas for the pigs. If this goes the way it might we will ferment for the layers and the pigs. The meaties will probably be gone by the time we have the pigs.

Have a great day, and thanks again for everyone's advice on my poor little rescue layer.

Ahhhh poor little thing! I am sorry for your loss but am glad you were able to put her down.

Lisa :)

Bee here is the video on the little gazebo I wanted to make a pen from.

Chicks eating their ff.

Awwwwww! They are adorable!!! So sweet....

I saw that gazebo before and I think it would make such an interesting pen for broodies, growing out roosters or for just separating birds for awhile. Such a cute idea....your hubby is something else with his building things.

I built a chick feeder today for the meaties I'm getting tomorrow..just ten of them....it's only a foot and a quarter long but it's going to be perfect for feeding chicks the FF.
