Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Me too!  I also like getting to the beach first thing in the morning and finding what the tides brought in...I'm nosy that way.  :D   I like how light I feel in the water and I love the feel of it on my skin, love the light sparkling off it, love the sound of it.  I like tropical ocean best because the water is so crystal clear all around the beaches and it gives one a chance to see the ocean floor.

:gig   Willow and Bee's Great Aloha Adventure...I can see the movie version of it now....  :lau   Everyone would soon turn off Duck Dynasty to watch our TV spin off of it all.  First season shows Bee culling all the wild chickens on the island to improve laying performance and meaty build, but leaves their natural hardiness and foraging skills alone.  Willow adds taro root to her ferment bucket to see what happens and demonstrates The Judge on sharks...stay tuned!

Season Finale episode shows Bee wrestling with sharks as Willow takes bets from islanders on who will win....sends Bee's one arm home to her family as the only part they found after it was all over.  Family refuses to pay shipping costs.

HAAAA! You made me laugh right out loud!!! ...I wonder if you dip bullets in a light wax if you could strap that Judge on while body surfing...hmmm? I bet it would be hard to aim while on that board BUT hey, that Judge will shoot those .410 shotgun shells so I'm sure I would wing that old shark anyhow. lol Bee... they need us!

Ohhh I don't know, Duck Dynasty... But no doubt we would blow the Kardashians clean out of the water. Khloe and Kim? ...pshhh whatever!

YEAAAAH. Neighbor had a tree or two cut down and trimmed three doors away. Just scored about 1/3 of a cord of good firewood (oak and maple mostly, no pine), small logs for free! Had my huskies help me haul it home in our antique radio flyer wagon! Tree service people were looking at my like I was crazy leading a husky hooked to a wagon carting wood up and down the block.

The chickens will be getting 1-2 bigger logs in their run to grow bugs and give them something fun to play around!

Hello, I've just ordered my first 15 meaties. They should arrive here on Thursday of this week. My layer pullets are fed ff. So I know that I need to get the chick starter going on fermenting. A question I have is do I leave the ff down all day for the for the first couple of weeks? Like I would for dry. Then go to a 2x feeding after a couple of weeks? Also do I still go by the rule of what they can eat in 15 min or so? Thanks for the help!

Deb

For the first week I fed enough that it took them a couple of hours to get it all gone...by evening they had picked it clean and so got another big serving. By morning it was picked clean. You can play with the amounts a little so that it's never entirely picked clean but they always have just a skim in the bottom of the feeder and that way you can feel a little better about it all.

I'm not so tuned into their eating 24/7 like most folks as I see that chicks don't do that with their real mama and these CX aren't any different. As much as you feed, they will eat and that is often the problem...overfeeding when they are too little to have the ability to carry it. You'll have to play with it and see what you can manage and how they react to your feedings. Chicks take a little longer to eat than do adults, so I give them a little more leeway as to how much time it takes to clean the plate.

Good score!! I think that is so neat you use your huskies like that...I'm a big fan of bikejoring and skijoring with dogs and always wanted to try it. If I lived in town I most definitely would be using this way to exercise my dog..and me. Out here in the hills it would take a whole team of huskies and a team of oxen to help me pull these hills on a bike! I would still love to get a work harness for Jake and let him help us do chores..he loves to pull and help me pull our chore cart.

I woke up to a racket outside and found the tree trimming folks who work for the electric company in my front yard. I've been expecting them. I should have got out there sooner, they cut down my azalea bush!

That's plumb cool that your dog will pull a wagon. That's what they do though, huh? Have you ever seen "cart goats"? That would be a handy dandy creature to have around the farm.

For a real life demonstration on the Judge...

Hope that works. I'll try it and change it if I need to.

It takes a LOT of work to get them to pull a wagon cleanly, especially without the $200 sledding/towing harnesses and equipment... I jury rig something out of their car harness and an old leash and it will suffice for lighter loads (150lbs or less) on wheels. The wagon scares the dogs, though, they try to run at first and it follows them making loud sounds and doesn't stop when they do. Today was my purebred's first time on pulling. She did great and got dehydrated bananas and eggs for treats at each stop.

My elder dog helped me move into my first apartment this way. It was fifteen minutes away from my parent's house on foot so we loaded down that very same wagon and carted my things over one trip at a time!

I figure they need to earn a living with me. Especially Nukka, my purebred. She's a livestock killer, slaughters any critter she can get her paws on if I'm not there to stop her. She has killed one of my rabbits and three wild ones and tried to defeather my hens twice. If she's sticking around, sometimes she has to put in a solid day's work. I often strap a backpack on her, load her down with my wallet, water bottles, keys and snacks in the zip pockets and make her carry everything I need for an outdoor trip (including her own food and portable bowls). My chickens and rabbits earn their living, she can too! I'm a firm believer in a tired dog is a good dog!

I used to have a white shepherd/akita mix dog. We would have him pull the kids around on their little sled in the winter. I didn't have the money to buy an actual harness but I did have horses. So, what I did was use the horse's halter and put it on the dog... backwards. Do the buckle up around his rib cage after putting his head through where the horse's nose would go. It worked.

The car harnesses distributes the weight pretty well if you have nothing else on hand. I love that cart harness.... BUT the smallest size may be too big for my husky! She is only 42lbs and she has an extremely petite build because she come from lines that were used for racing. She is built like a greyhound but is all muscle and strong bone and can pull like the dickens. I like that weight pull harness, too, though so I may pick one of those up. I was thinking of making one on my own and just haven't yet. Thanks so much for showing me this site!
