Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Hello All,

I had a question about the fermented feed. Every once in a while I get a whitish grey color film over the top of my fermented feed. It usually happens on the days that I am not home long enough to tend to it and give it a good stirring.

My question is, what is this whitish grey film? Is it mold? Is it bacteria? Or, is it normal?

I just don't know if I should be feeding it like that or not. I am getting tired of throwing it away because I don't know what it is.

Thank you for any insight you can provide on this.

That's the good stuff and you just stir it in and feed it to the birds. It's just a collection of the good bacteria cultures, called a SCOBY~symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast. Don't throw it out..it's the shiz-nay!

Hello y'all i'm going to learn as much as i can about this Fermenting feed. I would like to try it on my Marans culls.

1.How do you think it would work on that Breed?

2. Can you do the with layer and do you feed it to them wet?

3. Crack corn or whole corn and do you feed it to them wet?

4. Do you free range your birds along with this food?

5. What other advice do you have for a newbee?

Shiz-nay ? Dug deep for that one. For what it's worth, I've been giving everyone the ACV and the meaty's seem to be smellin better. Can't wait to give them the FF. I don't get off the hill here much, had a Dr. appt yesterday but ran out of time didn't get any buckets and such to start it. Wish things would go to plan once in a while......

LOL....  My neighbor Tom was doing some Brush abatement around the house for me earlier this summer.  He killed Two Female Rattlers.  Each one was about four feet long and full of eggs.  I asked what he did with the snakes?  "I got em skinned and marinating in Teryaki"   Enough food for about four people.

Venomous snakes freak me out just a bit! LOL I'm glad he killed them before they had those babies! One thing about rattlesnakes, God did put a rattler on their tail so we would have a chance to know they are there before we get bit. I wish all venomous snakes had that. Tom sounds like a resourceful fellow. I would no doubt help him eat them.

TW; If you lived near-by I would give you one or two of the hatches. My coop is a coop built for a tiny flock so I will only be keeping one hen this time around and trying to sell the rest of the birds. Whatever doesn't sell... I eat!

Also I totes just found a whole 'nother bag of Flock Raiser in my garage... After my bf told me we were on the last one... That means another additional 7-10 days with the meaties... Sheesh! I am trying to get a 5lb carcass so I may wait for the big ones to hit 8.5lbs and then process and then let the rest grow out some more.

Maybe next spring I can talk you into selling me some Maran eggs. You could work up a pearson square and use that flock raiser for your other birds OR use it to finish out the Marans you're not going to keep. How big do the Marans get? How well do they lay? Btw, thanks much. :)

1.How do you think it would work on that Breed? Works great for any breed!

2. Can you do the with layer and do you feed it to them wet? You can do it with any grain based feed and, yes, it is wet.

3. Crack corn or whole corn and do you feed it to them wet? See above!

4. Do you free range your birds along with this food? I do...some do not. I always recommend free range as the best source of nutrition and the grain feeds as a supplement.

5. What other advice do you have for a newbee? Use a trough with holes drilled in the bottom,so as to drain off any excess fluid. Don't do your FF in a metal bucket. Don't add molasses, bread yeast, yogurt or try to keep the water over the feed after it has absorbed the initial water offering. All those things just complicate a very simple process that is so beautiful because of its simplicity...don't mess with the beauty of it. If you do, you've lost out on an integral part of FF.
