Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

So I am in the middle of my first round of meat birds and the use of FF. while shooting a little video of a chick on the table after 1 week, she took a nice little poo. But the point is to see how different the poo is on FF....no smells or dirty butts.

i could not smell it either!!

And super easy to clean up if they happen to go somewhere you didn't want them!!

I picked up a couple of Polish Crested chicks at the LFS the other day....don't ask me what I was thinking. I have never had a desire to have them; but, they were there, and it was only those three left - and, two of them were getting a really bad build up where no build up should be....So, home with me they came.

Cleaned them up and have had them on water with ACV and the FF and haven't seen anymore clogged behinds...never in my life, if you had asked me before chickens, would I have ever imagined I would be examining a behind up close and personal. **le sigh** The depths to which I have fallen...

Okay things are going better with the FF thing. I ferment the grains and mix with the wet feed that I frement also, just not as wet. Mornings arent taking as long now, i drain it while fixing my lunch. Chicks are now getting fed at night and again when i get home from work. I am still having trouble with one group of meaties. I divided 11 chicks in two brooders, the group of 5 eats all each time i feed them, the other steps all over it and smash it down and then won't eat it, until I stir it then they eat some and smash it again. They dont eat as much and seem to be healthy. I worried at first but I've had them for a week and no one is slughish or sickly looking. So i guess they are eating.

Covered feeders work really well for the small ones, other than that, figuring out some sort of system that will allow only enough room for their heads to get in will stop them from trampling it and probably making their messes in it too! Yuk!

yeah tried that they only eat some and then decided it was too much work to eat the rest. I will just deal, soon it won't last that long. They will just eat it all.

Covered feeders and FF don't work too well, I agree. It dries up and is nearly impossible for them to get to once they eat what the hole gives them direct access to. I tried that at first because I didn't want to have them tromping through their food. I gave that up as a lost cause, and just served on a large tupperware lid. You may consider adding mealworms or such as an incentive to get them to mess in the flattened feed.
