Maybe next spring I can talk you into selling me some Maran eggs. You could work up a pearson square and use that flock raiser for your other birds OR use it to finish out the Marans you're not going to keep. How big do the Marans get? How well do they lay? Btw, thanks much.

TW, I don't keep roos so they wouldn't be fertile. I bought some hatching eggs from a lady up here. XD I live seriously in postage stamp suburb neighborhood. Two streets over the properties have about 800sq feet for the lawns, where as my back yard alone is more than 4000. I'm lucky to have found a whole quarter acre all to my lonesome where I live... But I will not keep roos in this sort of place.

Marans are sort of dual-purpose birds. They're supposed to get from 6-8lbs (hens-roos) fully grown and they lay like 150 eggs/year or some such... The eggs are a bit smaller than many birds, too. They're really more of a fancy breed than a utility breed I think, since they're a bit small for a meatier DP and a bit light on the egg count. But they're very pretty and lay the most beautiful eggs I've ever seen and I've wanted one since I got into chickens.

Next on my list; Easter Eggers and Norwegian Jaerhons! Eventually I'll get me some of those pretty Ayam Cemani too! Someday!

If you do have a feed with fish meal.....just do smaller batches.....like daily.....it will still give the feed enough time to soak thoroughly to get the back slop (fermented juices).....I have feed with fish meal......at first, yes my neighbors called the law. You just have to fuss with it a little more........

Good to know.... My nearest neighbor is 20 acres away.... and I will have to do this inside the house year round. Too hot in the summer..... 95 - 105 in the shade and a comfortable 85 in the house..... Its doable... Though in the winter I might have to put a submersible aquarium heater in the water to keep it up to temp. Easy to do in the lower bucket....

I've read a couple of ways--one with acv and one without.

It will ferment well clear down to 50*, just have to mix larger batches then so that it has more time to ferment the grains. I just moved to a larger batch mix as we have been having temps into the 40s at night and mine is in the coop. Someone suggested a heated water bucket the other day so one could keep it outside and I think that is an excellent idea...and will be following through on that suggestion. No more toting feed from the house in the winter months.
