Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

:-) Knew you'd pop up and set us straight...

I don't think I've seen your video... and I read all of the FF, and sprouting threads, and natural chicken keeping. Hmm. Maybe post again, anyway? It's that time of year... and I have a hugely unlimited supply of burlap bags from my vice (coffee) roasters.
Do you feed forage every day, or just on and off?
When I start I feed every day.

AletaG- the alfalfa pellets help raise up the protein level in my grains only feed I am starting in a couple days (I am. Trying to finish up last of FF layer first) The protein lever lof the grains is 16%. I give them on the side animal protein like calf liver, red meat, fish, etc. whatever I have leftover from meals. Plus oyster shell & grit feared choice.

Plus I have a chest freezer full of fruits & veggies I got out of my garden all summer & for pm the farmers market. Some of the farmers gave my mom a lot of greens free when she said they were for my hens

.

Now I am on the look out for free pumpkins & gourds. And my hunting friends are Savin me livers and hearts also. I can't beat free animal protein and veggies to use all winter

Heck I ask people to save me the turkey carcasses from thanksgiving. They freeze well & the girls think they won the jackpot with a turkey carcass to pick clean

Since the crude protein of alfalfa pellets is 17% I'm not sure you will make any appreciable gains on your current protein percentage with the use of the alfalfa but the crude fiber is 92%, so I'm wondering if the increased fiber would displace nutrients. With research placing distiller's grains at 25% and brewer's grains at 24% protein, with the FF being comparable, I'm thinking there really isn't a need to otherwise boost proteins.

Thank you! Will get right on watching that. Hopefully will remember to "ovate" ya when I get my privileges back. You can thank that darn murder mystery for that!

Everything I've read as whitepapers, has an increase of usable protein at maybe 0.5-3% , and barley starts out between 10-12% ... And since that's all I am using, except when I'm spiking it with banana peels, pumpkin guts, etc., been adding other sources, animal based, when I can... I'll take your word for it, and just keep an eye on overall chicken happiness... :-)

Here's the source of that evaluation: http://ingredients101.com/brsgrnd.htm

The difference between distillers grains and brewers grains is the difference between corn and/or rye and barley being used as the primary grain, with the DGs being only 1% higher on protein than the BGs, being 25% and 24% respectively...at least, according to the National Feed and Grain Association.

   Might be able to use that at the sentencing in the Dave Leghorn murder trial.....

I thought so too. Save it and use it if you want to. I can erase it from this thread if you want me too, hate to spoil the big moment! LOL

The farmers market here govese left over fruits and not so cute shaped veggies for the girls! Lol I also give them turkey/chicken carcasses cut in half- they LOVE them.
I never thought to freeze the fruits/veggies from the market! Doh. How did that escape me?! I freeze melons and yogurt and they are my best friends all summer knowing I have a freezer of treats. Der. Thank you for the freeze for later reminder!

I know it's bad but I have salt cravings. A good ol' salty lemon and I am in fruit heaven! lol And those real sour granny smith apples sprinkled with salt, good stuff! I've got a thing for sour foods too. Yes I am strange.

Not strange. Have you ever tasted the oriental treats that are wrapped up like candy and are really sour and salty? I think they are plums. I don't like them but it sounds like you would love them. Check them out sometime from an oriental foods store.
