Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

That's what I was wondering. At a show, it's all about conformation to the SOP. No doubt the eggs are lovely, but the breed was originally known for putting on good flesh in a hurry. Then greed entered the picture....as per usual..and the genetics got muddy from there, from all accounts.

How can the chicken judge know what color that marans hen lays, or what egg color a male would have to contribute genetically to his offspring? Aren't they judged by their feather color and body shape?

Breeding isn't the same as exhibiting. They should be the same but they aren't. At a show, you can't tell what color of egg a chicken lays unless she produces one, but egg color is important to many breeds. I remember reading in the standard for the Maran that a dark brown egg was the most important quality for the breed. I don't think the Maran standard has been published in the SOP yet, so it might end up being the one I read when it is finally published. I don't believe that the SOP even mentions egg colors for Ameraucanas, but they must have a blue egg.

OR just put them all in the freezer . . . . not a problem with pellets-- which arrived to day.

Price of grain jumped today-- $1 a bag. Cornish project will be terminated tomorrow morning.

I always thought the SOP involved conformation, size, feathering and color, leg feathering, combs, eye color, leg color, etc. and is what a rooster is judged on as are hens. I also know that eggs are judged for their color. Breeders generally focus on one or the other when showing their birds/eggs. I would think that a judge can't determine the kind of egg a specific hen lays unless he/she is there when it happens......

Something that gripes me to no end is grown kids these days not taking care of their parents. I hope and pray to God that I die before I need anyone to take care of me. And in the one case I am thinking of, that parent pretty much worshipped the grown kiid that now has no time for them. Did everything in the world for them AND their kids and grandkids. Now they don't have time... unless they want something.

Here is what Marans Club USA says about the SOP:

I remember my mother talking about visitng her grand mother, upstairs. ANd a cousin in the next house. THis created life long connections. People that I also have met. My kids have a very different life. With all the mothers working outside the home how can there be time to build important relatinships. Someone needs to do it. Usually it is the mom. ANd I don't think we should have to do two things both working and mothering to be valued. Spread too thin it is the mom that becomes stressed. Geez that word always makes me think "dessert" dang.

I too expect my kids to take care of me when I get older.I have sacrifieced much for them.I"m trying to help my kids by building a solid relationship with them: they help me, I help them. We need each other and help each other. I still get lots of hugs so I hope that means I"m still important. I love my kids but they have to work to help the family. Life is not free. I didn't learn what I needed to when someone else did it for me. Hoping to help my kids learn those lessons sooner than I did.

I sure wish I lived close and we could can those together and you could also teach me how to do those chickens. You'd have to knock em in the head of course. hee hee but I could help dress them with no problems! Man that would be SOOO FUN to have a canning buddy! How I miss my mother in law because she was mine. Man I miss that woman!

She was more of a Mom to me than my own mom was. She was also in a wheel chair. She and I sure did have loads of fun! I'd take her shopping and everything. Once she got cancer I took her most every time to her treatments and to the Dr. Just a precious precious woman! Old school from the get go but such an awesome woman that NEVER complained and didn't feel sorry for herself in the least. She could do anything we can do! She cooked, cleaned washed dishes hung out clothes etc. Anyway I sure do miss her!

Yep, we don't know how precious they are sometimes, until they're gone, then it hits us like a ton of bricks! And the Grim Reaper is creeping up on ALL of US, too.

Anyway, to canning: Carol and I have canned over 300 jars of stuff over the last couple years. The way the economy is, we may need it sooner than we think. What a mess this World is in!!

Fire it up girls! Most of what we canned we got free, or very cheap. We love our Mennonite friends.

How do those feeders work with ff mash? Have you tried it? I just use big dog food bowls for my ff. They don't climb in and try to scratch with ff. Another plus! : )
Ach! Sorry... I haven't used FF, yet. All my experiences has been with laying mash, starter/grower, cracked corn, etc.

I used to have these large feeders with the "pyramid" wire cages on them, but I can't find them.

Ahhhhhhh, here ya go LINK. I knew I'd find them for you. I'm in Southern Maryland, but if I was closer, I'd build you a nice feeder. I'm probably going to build mine.

What you're looking for is on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th row down. I don't know how many chickee-boos (remember the chef on the Muppets?) you have, but the 20" ones are cheap, but if one of the big ones in row 2 will do it, it would calculate to the price of 4 or 5 of the 20" ones. So whatcha think?

(BTW, the 36 and 48 inch galvanized in the second row have spinner bars on the top so the ding-a-lings can't sit there and poop in their feed. LOL I used to have those, too. The bar comes off for cleaning.)

I hope your kids do take care of you should you need it Arielle. The case I am speaking of the family was always very close and lived close. The mother couldn't have possibly sacrificed any more to give and care for that child and her grandkids and great grandkids (and still does!) - time, money, possessions, literally any and everything. Never ever a "no" to them. Now that the mom needs help, child and their family have NO TIME. If it were up to them they would collect their inheritance, grandma would be warehoused in a resthome and forgot about. If THIS child can do their mother the way they are after how their mother smothered them in love and care their whole life, I have absolutely no confidence in anybody in this world. If I were that mom I would leave every last dollar and possession I have to "Save the Whales" or something - not to my self-centered selfish child and her family. But she STILL gives and they still TAKE.
