Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Processing cheap meat roos today.  I've never processed this late in the year and have found that all the skin and connective tissue is bound like super glue to these carcasses!  I'll never do this again, I tell ya.  Usually a warm bird can be shucked down mostly by hand and only at key points will you need a knife but I've had to skin every inch of these roosters...talk about tedious!  :th It's cold and windy today, so hands are stiff for the job.  Lesson learned....always there are lessons to be learned about this whole chicken and livestock business.

This free meat has its price.

Well Bee, you could have brought them in the house and let them warm up real good first. You know how easy Mr Silkie Pants was because you kept him inside...? hahahaha

GOOD MORNING FELLOW FF'S!!

I am going to have to bring this subject up with my family on 'chicken anatomy'!!  Out of 7 kids I am the country girl.  :yesss:   I have a feeling it will be a wild and lively discussion!!

Have a GREAT day!

Lisa  :)

That would be a great discussion over Christmas dinner. LOL

Yes...I could have. That Cochin is such a sweet guy that I could see myself bringing him in for popcorn and a movie...that one will be the hardest to kill. I'd keep him around for awhile if Toby wasn't so aggressive towards him. Poor guy already has a gimpy hip, he doesn't need lardy ol' Toby thumping on him whenever he comes in the coop to eat or sleep.

Let me ask Y'all this. Do you hatch you Meat birds or buy them from a hatchery? Which seems to be easier on the money 6 week Birds or 12 week birds? or do you go for tast over cost? I'm thinking a 6 week bird would be cheaper because it would not eat as much food unless it eat twice as much in 6 weeks.

Hey there Chad. I have only done extra roosters but this next year I hope to breed some DelawareXBuckeye crosses and see how they do for meat but I also want to do some CX.

I was just thinking, there's no way I could get that big scoby disk out of that quart jar if I wanted to other than break it all up into pieces.
(This pic is looking up through the bottom of the jar.)

Do any of you guys make kefir?

Love my kefir. I stupidly let it die in the fridge while I took a break for a while. So I re-ordered it and it came in yesterday. Got it sitting on the counter. Will not be dumb again. It's so good for you and really helps my stamina.

It is really good for you. I've never made it with the grains but I plan on getting some and starting. My stamina could use some HELP! LOL Where did you find your grains? I wish I had a source for raw goat milk to make it with. My source moved. :( I will have to ask the Mennonites and Amish if any of them have any milk goats and extra milk. I hope so!

Oh I was hoping you could keep him around. Maybe you could talk Toby into a truce? I don't guess a "Scratch Summiit" (like O's beer summit) would do any good... poor Fluffy. I think some animals are worth keeping around just for their personality.
