Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I'm not a big coffee drinker but I have to say, it has been rather good lately. Hot chocolate sounds good! I sure feel sorry for all the critters living out in this mess. I guess they are built for it or they would all be long gone. No doubt, their Maker knows what He is doing.

Me either, but enough milk and whipped cream can make any coffee drinkable.

It's dusk here and Jake was going crazy, barking towards the woods and looking down at the house...that's his signal that something big is out there. The local black bears are not out in this cold, so I know it's the 'yote pack taking advantage of this cold to hunt down some bedded down prey. I took the shotgun up and made my presence known and checked on the coop...minus 2 in there and the birds were shuffling for position on the roosts.

My coop is pretty open air in some ways, so no real insulation going on there. I decided to turn on the heat lamp for just this night, thinking to give the gals a better night's rest. It won't be enough to warm them up but might take off the chill in the coop. As I was leaving the coop I noticed all the fresh chicken tracks in the snow...those silly birds were out in this today!!!

It hasn't got above 7 degrees for most of the day, with windchill factors in the negative teens and has been howling snow, and those silly things were out in it. Tough birds.
lol well they like frolicking about since that's what you've taught them to do.

Man I sure hope all is well with them tonight and those things on the prawl!

Man kind it's cold out there. Got my glove wet trying to put some warm water in the roos bucket so hopefuly the birdbath heater do dad will do it's job tonight. Anyway got my glove wet and tried to pick up a rock and it froze to the rock. That's COLD for here! I think they said on the news last night 40 year olds here haven't seen it this cold.

All of the girls are all piled up on one end except one lone aussie on the other end. ?????? Don't know WHY she's not with the others for some heat! MAYBE after dark she will head that direction. The wind is so cold it hurts your skin. burrrr and you northerners are probably laughing your head off at me cuz that's your norm. It's suppose to be 12 here tonight. I sure hope all my babies make it.

Whew! It sure is cold out! We are at -10 with a windchill of -35. I had a nice warm cup of tea, rather than coffee.

My garage is very drafty for a garage, though much LESS drafty than a coop or something. It is also very dry. It is above 0 in the garage but still VERY cold. The rabbits with litters have boxes for them and their kits to hide in and stay warm! I will be taking out some more hay to all the animals including the meaties just in case... It will be just as cold tomorrow. Brr!

Looking forward to getting those meaties in the freezer tomorrow... I will be skinning them, piecing them up, and then I will boil the carcasses into a delicious soup! Mmmm! I make a great chicken soup out of chicken bones... These ones should be especially good tasting!

Oh, you poor thing having to process in this weather!!!! You will be frozen! You get that lake effect cold off the lakes there, don't you? I was up there last winter and the wind off the lakes will cut you like a knife.

Bee, I skin/gut indoors! Processing outdoors in THIS?

Not happening! I process bunnies outside but I process chickens indoors. I do kill and bleed outdoors but that's few seconds to take off the head and then a few minutes indoors to let it bleed out!

The lake also does funny things. We have INSANE wind because of the lake. However, the lake is a boon and a bane. The wind is bad but the lake maintains a constant middle ground temperature. In the winter, the wind coming off the lake is actually WARMER until the lake freezes. Once the lake is frozen it has no bearing on winter weather. In the summer it cools the area down as we get temps up to 100 quite easily and the wind is great in the warm months. In the winter it means we get winds like today where the windchill continues to drop down to -40 overnight. It's bad. That's why we have the animals in the garage! I even put a towel against the bottom of the door to keep it less drafty!

That's good! I was thinking you were going to process in your garage and I was imagining your frozen fingers. I was processing outdoors on these meat roosters of mine and my hands were just aching from the cold and I could barely grip my knife. My mother would have a holy terror fit if I asked to process in her house...she's a clean freak.

You'll have to let us know how the meat tastes after you sweetened these birds up on FF.
