Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Hi TDubya.,. Just curious, what are you doing to treat the frostbite and the sneeze ?

Hey there. I have only put cod liver oil on the frostbite. I fed the frostbit roos and the pen with the sneezing roo some moist feed with a lot of garlic, peppers, tumeric and ginger. I also cut up some peppers and garlic and put it in a quart of acv and will be putting that in Sneezy's water if he doesn't clear up soon. I may give that to the frostbit boys too hoping maybe maaaaybe it will help keep down any infections. I gave all the pens some pumpkin today too, just for some added Vitamin C. Tomorrow night I will probably clean the frostbit wattles good and treat again. Can you tell I don't know what to do so I am just throwing the kitchen sink at them??? LOL

oh man I sure hope this works for you TW!

It got in the low 40s here today but very damp cold...this is certainly hard on the stock, I tell ya! My birds came out of it just fine and even started laying in this cold snap, were out foraging all day and look none the worse for wear. It helps that I don't currently have any birds with large combs and wattles as Toby was the only one of my permanent flock and all the cheap meat roosters are in the jar.

TW, sure hope you get those combs cleared up without any secondary infections going on.

yeah it was in the 60's here today but quite nice. I was able to get out and go do a little shopping but EVERY WHERE I went when I got back in my car I cleaned my hands with the sanitizer stuff. Just don't want to take any chances right now that I am finally starting to feel a little better and this mess is breaking up.

Went by the health food store and the dude there ALSO told me to stay away from ALL dairy....hummmmm he said it was mucus forming. yep know that with the cows milk allergy I had.

TW, some vaseline might help. There is also a weed, very common in urban areas, called a broad leaf plantago. This plant has some amazing healing properties including painkiller, antibacterial and helps promote healing. Neat thing about this plant is that it isnt an old wives tale like so much herbal medicine. It is scientifically proven to be effective, safe, and has been used for hundreds of years. In fact some parts of this plant are used in modern day over the counter medicine for humans! I know around here all Id have to do to find it is rake the snow off of part of my lawn. Maybe you have some where you live you can find? If you do crush it it fine with a food processor or a mortar and pestle and put it on the combs. See how it works! I use this plant on blisters all the time. :3

TW, the common name is plantain but the scientific and "real" name is plantago. I call it by the scientific name to differentiate it from the subspecies of banana. XD It confuses people when you call them plantains and they think of the starchy fruit.

Got a funny to tell about my dog, Jake, a lab/border collie mix. His wireless containment system is over 10 yrs old and is finally on the blink, so I have purchased a new one but have not put it in place yet, so he has been challenging his boundaries....no..he's been making little forays to scrounge for food when I am not looking. That's a more accurate assessment of what is going on. He knows this is a big ol' NO, so he's very careful to sneak and do this. He has brought back many discarded animal parts that had been placed out of his reach for a reason...so our yard wouldn't look like a giant hyena den.

Today I threw some oatmeal cookies out to the birds to eat and they picked at them and moved on to forage for real foods out in the leaves and grasses. Later I noticed Jake a little ways out of his boundary, head down in that border collie stalking mode, taking very slow steps towards something I could not see. Very tiny movements, sloooooooooowwwwwwlllllly stalking something...it looked like he was walking on brittle egg shells so softly did those paws alight on the ground....I move to a better view to see what he was focused on and ready to kill.

A cookie.

The dog was focused on a cookie left behind by the crew and he was trying to sneak and do it without me seeing him leave his boundary. Good try, sneaky dog. I knocked on the window and he scurried, head and tail down, back to his inner sanctum of recognized boundary.

I love that dog!
