Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Hey ladies, well I made it through my first "culling".

Not near as bad as I expected. Jennifer my buddy, was extremely in depth and caring for me. I did not use the axe. Later on when I do my own it will be with a cone and knife. She skinned hers. She did the first and got the head of the 2nd. Then I took over and completed it. She still had to help with the pulling on the feathers. I have no stamina after getting sick and I went to the Dr. this morning and they took 5 vials of blood. I was pooped when I completed it. Gotta build up my strength. The two roos finished out at about 3 or so lbs. She had a very nice set up at her backyard. with a 6 ft ladder over a trash can next to the table. Chop and drop to drain. I feel very empowered now that I have finished one. Got my feet wet.

Good job! I'm so proud of you! Now starts the fun part of doing chickens...using the cull to improve on your flock until you have a flock that makes you a profit instead of drains your pocket.

I have a question for you guys... Did y'all eat the eggs that you had freeze and crack during the cold weather?

Since we have quite a bit of eggs right now, there was no need to save them...freezing changes the yolks and makes them gummy. They don't cook up so well after a freezing. Jake gets all frozen and damaged eggs, so he got 5 so far this season that had frozen from being left over night. His coat is looking quite glossy from the eggs and from getting the chance to roll in the snow every day...that seems to do his coat so much good!

For what its worth.... The clone extends the genetic life of the exceptional example. If that animal is of a quality to pass on exceptional genes... It is worth it.

Those genes passed on down the line Will feed many many people. Where that is used.... Is up to the people involved.

Me personally I would prefer to raise up some old bloodlines.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloucestershire_Old_Spots

Good Brooder... UM er raise up her babies on her own. Good forager.... Well Um you get it.

I guess I shouldn't have interjected my part on "high-end" genetics in this format. Now that it's out there I will add a bit of context. Supreme genetics are used to shift populations (whether you agree with it or not). In the case I mentioned, the Argentenians and the Brazilians will buy everything he will produce. They can import semen and embryos but it is nearly impossible to import live animals. The genetics are far superior than what is currently available and these individuals are the front runners for what the cattle industry will be in these countries for the next 30 years. We are talking about hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of head of native cattle. Also, these cattle are far removed from the "show cattle" people are familiar with but bred to standards with progeny and production records kept. Folks don't accidently spend this kind of money. Sorry for even mentioning it as this concept is definitely out of place on a back-yard-chicken forum.

Ditto what TW said...on this thread we don't mind a little hijack if we are learning something. We love to learn!

On a less intellectually stimulating note, today I learned to darn socks and I couldn't be more thrilled with the results....I'm STILL smiling about it!

And I learned about the product called the Trout Magnet, developed by a fellow here in my state...and the very thing I'm going to use to slay my boys at trout fishing this year! I've got a YT vid pulled up right now that I'm going to watch about the technique involved in using this bait....and then I'm going to show them what the old lady can do!

No, no, totally fascinating. Out of our range, but it could change the map of beef in those countries.
