Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Linda, congrats on your cull! Personally I found out I do not like processing chickens. Oh, I'll DO it and will raise another batch of CX this year probably but I'd MUCH rather process rabbits....

TW; I take my frozen eggs that are cracked, thaw them, and feed them back to the birds by throwing them at the ground hard enough that the yolk breaks and the shell is in several pieces. I don't bother with the scrambling or anything like that. Frozen uncracked they go on the egg skelter like the rest.

I don't like killing either one but I do and I will.

If they froze and cracked but the membrane wasn't oozing I just washed them off and ate them. If they were oozy I gave them to the dog. It is crazy how the shell cracks when they freeze then when they thaw out the shell goes back together and looks like is was never cracked.

I had posted this to a couple of my other threads but thought you folks might like to have this link as well~it's a comprehensive site about all kinds of feed nutrition for livestock: http://www.feedipedia.org/

Thanks, bookmarked it.

TW; I don't LIKE doing either.. But after doing those PITA chickens my bunnies in the garage are starting to look awfully tempting.... And then today at our local market, they had rabbits for $5.89/lb and they looked soooo tasty.... So expensive, though... Not gonna do that when I can just wait three weeks for these to finish growing out...

Dang that's high, but it would be good. :) I have never seen rabbit for sale in a grocery, restaurant or anywhere. The only ones I have seen for eating were wild ones that I killed. What age do you kill yours?

I found a great vitamin / mineral / probiotic supplement for our fermented feed, Fertrell Nutribalancer. It has a greater variety of minerals than any other supplement I have found. It contains eight different fermenting probiotics and our fermentation has been rocking since I started using it. I learned about it from Joe Salatin's book, Pastured Poultry Profits, where he reveals his methods for raising meat birds. He said they did away with their hospital pens once they started using it. I've only been using it for a couple weeks, but I love the stuff already. I posted the nutrition facts from the label in another thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/846712/ways-to-improve-health/100#post_12747918

What age do you butcher or do you wait for size?

I slaughter my extra Roos when the crowin gets on my last nerve. I don't know how many weeks that is but they are still pretty tender.
