That's hilarious. Turkey brawls.I have been using fermented scratch grains for some time. It cleaned up My Rangers smelly poop. My Turkey Broad Breasted whites love it as well. As mentioned I just let the mash get low and add more grain and water so it perks up fast, in beer making this is called heavy pitch rate. I have never had any mold but I use it quickly with 17 chicken and 8 Turkey. I also add acv to my 55 gallon watering system. Grow rates are fine with ff my only problems are when the Toms get to mashed up they start fighting and get the hens all annoyed![]()
......Hey barkeep............Another round please...and make mine a double (I'm just yoking) !![]()
I have this too Bee, I am only giving the ff every other day now since it takes them longer to eat it, today when i went to get some out to drain the whole top was covered with the same grey layer, I went ahead and stirred it back into the feed and drained out what I needed, mine has been in the living room close to the wood stove but not next to it, so I need to move mine to another room also. Mine are still eating it but not with as much vigor as when it was warm.I had to move my FF away from the heat in the living room near the wood stove....I found this accelerated the rate of ferment and increased the formation of the gray layer of "stuff" on top of the ferment. I don't think this is particularly bad stuff, and is more than likely just an increase in the mother enzymes found in the ACV, but I also don't want too much of that forming...when I was growing up, we always removed that from the fermented foods before eating. I mix mine into the FF but in this very warm room it is forming quite quickly and this overgrowth is not something I'm going to allow.
I moved the mix into my room which is the coolest in the house and will watch how it does there. Even when it was very warm outside this spring, with temps clear up to 98*, I still didn't have this level of the grey film on the top of the FF. Of course, the FF had a much quicker turn around time when I was feeding the CX.
