Fertile eggs?

Finally, I got 2 fertile eggs under the second hen. So I should hopefully get at least one hen. The oldest egg seems to be on day 7 and the youngest on day 5 so only a couple days offset. I also had to fix the problem of the hen getting off the nest, and sitting on a different one. So hopefully that’s fixed.

Just candled the eggs under my second hen. One egg is dead. Day 4 quiter. No heart beat (should have one where its at in development) did the float test as a last resort. (Yes there is an air sack in the egg) sunk. That, plus no movment = dead. Ill crack it open and post pictures here in a moment.

It apears it stoped after developing the heart. (It was on day 8… should have been a baby, this egg was allways behind the

other one.)

Forgot to mention, had another infertile egg under them too. Got rid of it. So only one egg under this hen as well. The problem is. This hen did not do a good job last time, but Im willing to let her try again. I also want to experiment with this hatch. By letting her raise the chick with the flock. I wanted to do this last time, but the hen killed the chick during a thunderstorm. (Lighting struck near, startling the hen.)

another thing you should probably know. I have horrible luck with colored eggs. All of the times I tried hatching them. The chicks die a little after hatching or don’t hatch at all. Ive tried to hatch 9 colored eggs. Only 2 of those hatched. And both died, one being the chick that was crushed, the second fell from a tall place when I wasn’t looking. (That one was my fault) so hopefully these chicks break the cycle. (Since their father is an EE, that makes them EE as well.)

Feeling a bit nervous now. It’s thundering bad where I am. (For context, I lost a chick before they hatched, due to the thunder startling the hen.) so I am hoping with all my might that this chick makes it to at least hatch day.

In the next couple days we are rehoming him, and the younger cockerel. (Cant have roosters in my neighborhood. Got extremely lucky with him. no crowing until now.) now hopefully these two eggs hatch.

Second hens eggs have been replaced again, she had a habbit of leaving the next and sitting in another one for hours on end until I would notice. The other chich seems to have developed halfway to where it was spost to be. But It lacked movement in the egg, and the egg should have been fully dark. Sad seeing how far it got though. I blocked off the other nest so now this one is the only one.

Any hens that have been mating, and that are laying fertile eggs, will probably continue to lay fertile eggs for a week or so after the males are gone. (Possibly more than a week, but the chances start going down about that point.)

But hopefully you won't need to keep trying.

Hopefully, ive heard it can sometimes last up to 4 weeks. But I hope I wont have to keep trying. I just want two hens from him. (Very high chances the one under the first hen is a boy) so fingers crossed!

In future, if you are able to move the broody to a place with only one nest, that would prevent this kind of problem. Of course moving her is no guarantee of a problem-free hatch. It just tends to change what kind of problems you have (like whether you have a suitable place to move her to, and whether that broody is willing to be moved.)
