Fertilized eggs causing stomach upset?

Now you sound like my husband! I'm not given to psychosomatic delusions! LOL - I'm going with the "too rich" as I've had problems in the past when Uncle Frank came from Italy and made his "wonderful" pizza drowned in butter. Now what self-respecting Italian even uses butter, let alone that much... But that's a whole 'nuther story!

I agree 100%. Clean everything in the hen house and consider running oxine (non activated) with water through a humidifier in the coop for 30 minutes once a week. Too much to explain here if you are not familiar, but you can google "oxine and chickens". The dilution rate is 7 oz. per gallon of pure water. Use this mix to fill humidifier. Salmonella is present in many more hen houses than the owners would like to believe...it's just most of the time it is killed by cooking and so we never notice it. If you have a particularly heavy load in your hens and you dont cook the eggs extremely well ( I know because I like mine over easy ) you can get enough in you to cause your symptoms. You have to get the salmonella load down to a smaller level or eat your eggs over cooked. What you describe is almost certainly mild salmonella poisoning.

As we age we lose some of the tolerance we had for certain foods because our bodies lose the ability to digest them. Some people become gluten or lactose intolerant as they age, for example. It's unfortunate but, considering the alternative, we have to learn to live with it (I can no longer tolerate raw or partially cooked broccoli--which I love.) and moderate out diet. This may be what is happening to you in re to eggs. I seriously doubt that the addition of an extra cell from the rooster has anything to do with it. You may find that if you wait and eat the eggs later in the day, after your digestive system has adjusted to having food in your stomach you will not have the problem.

BTW, I don't know about Italians but the main ingredient of French cooking is butter, butter and then more butter. That artificial stuff can kill you.

To: bairo and Ole rooster - now you two sound like the delusional ones. I'm going with the sensible explanations! LOL, and I've got to get some serious work done today so, please, no more "helpful" advice! Thanks

hope you feel better soon

You don't experience this with any other food? If greasy type foods (such as bacon) bother you, you may need to go to the doctor and have your gall bladder checked. My mom had horrible pain when her gall bladder quit working.

I started having digestive issues with eggs and a few other foods. I noticed that it happened when:

1. I overate in general. I cut down on my portion size and I stopped having as many problems.

2. I wasn't getting enough"good" bacteria. I bought a probiotic (multi-strain) in pill form and took it a few times a day as directed on the package. The egg/gas problems stopped. I started eating more yogurt, but I really needed the extra boost from the pills. It could be coincidental. I don't care, as long as I'm not having the problems. After a few months, it starts again and I start taking the probiotics again. Just find some in the vitamin section of the pharmacy or grocery store. If it doesn't work after a week, try something else.

It could be possible that there is some other third variable that I have overlooked. Some people recommend probiotics for everything, I am not one of those people. I am, however, all for eliminating a food one at a time from the diet to torubleshoot your own system. You might have something else bothering you that's exacerbating the egg issue.

Good luck!

I have the same problem, fertilized eggs make my stomach ache. I can eat them just not all the time. I think I am teaching my stomach how to cope with fertilized eggs. I can eat them about 3 times a week. I am planning a pen without a roo soon so I can have me a stash of eating eggs. I have heard of several people that have this problem so you are not alone.

MANY years ago I was a foreign exchange student in Turkey. I lived with a Dr.s family. Every morning after breakfast I projectile vomited. Never had any warning and did not feel sick. They figured out it was the eggs because they had own coop somewhere with rooster. No more fertilized eggs, no more vomiting. You have to be careful about the flu vaccine as it is grown in fertilized eggs as well.
