My 16 week old pullet was acting strange last night when she was in the run. She was in the corner with her tail up. Looked like she wasnt feeling quite well.. After a few minutes, she laid an egg with a very thin shell. The other girls were at it right away. I scared them away from the egg but it was too late. Ten minutes later she laid an egg with no shell. I have seen her lay in the nesting box and produce a small egg almost every day for a week now.. Is she ok?

Boy, at 16 weeks of age she's laying awfully young!! Sounds to me like her system is just trying to "get in gear" so you'll see odd eggs until she gets it right. Do you have nesting boxes set up?

Welcome to BYC!

Iwiw X2 She sounds awful young to be laying. It takes times for new pullets to get their egg laying machines in gear, especially pullets as young as yours. She will no doubt out grow her laying issues over time. Just make sure they are all on layer feed now and put out some oyster shell on the side. Keep it close to the water and feed so they can find it easily. She may just need more calcium right now. Keep an eye on her, but generally these things iron themselves out after a month or so of laying.

Enjoy all your poultry adventures and welcome to our flock!

Glad you joined the flock. You might try putting a golf ball or two in the nest box, so she gets the idea that is where eggs belong.

Welcome from the Ocean State!

It is not unusual. I had a pullet lay one small egg at 16 weeks, also. Then nothing for several weeks. Some just mature earlier than others.
