It would help if we Americans weren't so addicted to automatic transmissions. My 98 Escort sedan with a 5-speed gets 35mpg. I bought it used from a dealer, with about 60k miles, a couple of years ago for about $4000. And I don't have to worry about being able to keep up with traffic.

I have an '02 Diesel Jetta that gets 53 MPG. Guess I'll hang onto it a while. It's got 130,000 miles on it, but no problems (knock on wood).
