Final Pathology Report Results

I know this thread is really old now, but wanted to update anyone who is still following it. After more research I have sadly concluded that I just don't think the treatment protocol Dr. Pruitt recommended is going to be effective. I can't find any data supporting it in the literature. We've had a really rough spring / summer. I've lost a few more birds to predators, and at this point, I really can't justify the expense of outfitting replacement housing for the birds during antibiotic therapy. I only have nine birds left. So, regretfully, I've decided to depopulate the flock. I have been collecting hatching eggs because I'm stubborn or masochistic or something. I've dipped them in 3000 ppm oxytetracycline, because there was a small (<5%) chance that the bacteria could be transmitted to the eggs. I'll brood them till they're old enough to be tested, then test them for MG and hopefully they will be clean. I just couldn't wipe out the genetic line without one more try. Thank you all for your advice and support.

We know this has been very difficult for you, all the decisions involved, the stress, etc. All I can say is that I certainly wish you all the best with your future plans.

Traci, i have been following your post, though haven't responded till now. i'm very sorry for what you have been going through. i've been in your same position. You've made a very difficult decision, but the right one for your situation. One good thing is that MG is fairly fragile in the environment. After a good cleaning and disinfecting, you should be able to eliminate it from your environment. i forget the timeline now, but it is less than a week that the virus can live outside a host (or feces). For some reason i'm thinking four days. Although, i let my pen and coop lie dormant for close to a year, just for emotional reasons.

i might be a little concerned about the hatching eggs. i also read that there is a chance the MG can pass through them. But it sounds like you have done a lot more research than me. That wasn't a consideration in my case.

Good luck in your future endeavors. You are facing a hard road, but in time, things will get better. Seeing new life will help to heal your wounds.

Traci,
I have been in your shoes and not long ago.

I now have a new flock started and love them bunches. I bought Virkron S to finish my cleanning. My new flock looks and acts healthy. I will get them checked at 4 months. I went 3 months without any birds at all. I redid my coop, put in sand in a run or two. Built a brooder inside the extended coop. Now I have a safer cleanner coop and run. Also I am more careful with biosecurity this time. Sooo sorry you have had to go through this.

I'll be leaving the coop empty for some time. At least three months, but probably closer to nine. I want to put them in a mobile coop so I can put fencing around them for a run with netting over the top to hopefully cut down on predator losses too. I hate how static runs get all dusty with nothing growing, so I want to be able to move them frequently.
