Hello!
This is a very important question so please please people answer!
Our family lives in a gated community with a man-made lake where there are turtles, ducks, geese, fish, etc. Well, one of the types of fish is large-mouth bass. And when duckling season comes around, 8 perfectly healthy ducklings hatch, and slowly, one at a time, each is swallowed whole by large-mouth bass. So, every year we try to save them from getting eaten, but we can only do one batch because ducklings are a lot of time, energy, and money. Right now, we have a batch, and we're sure there are more ducklings, and we are finally asking what to do! Currently, there are three goslings as well with their mother and father, a few of them have already gotten sucked under and we can't save them today. Is there anything we can do?

URGENT!!!!!! PLEASE ANSWER!

The only thing I could think of, Is try fishing down by the pond for some bass, of course, stay far away from the babies, I think that would be your best bet.

Gonna have to pen raise them till they are too big to be eaten by a bass. Even then I've seen snapping turtles take a young bird down on our farm pond.

Otherwise it's just how nature works. I remember years where we had 40 something ducks and the next year we were down to 10 letting them free range on the farm. If it aint something in the water getting them it's something with 4 legs. I think more than once we lost part of our tame mallards to a wild flock that settled down on the pond for a few days.

Don't think the mother would take too kindly, humans putting the ducklings in a pen.

Heres just a little advice for your own protection. Don't get caught interfering with wild animals, and dont give out any personal information or location or you could incriminate yourself

I think since the pond is man made and stocked with large mouth bass that human contact has given the ducklings a disadvantage and stepping in to help in a non destructive way is justified. There are responsible ways to do it and irresponsible ways to do it

First is making sure what breed they actually are. Maybe they are actually a domesticated breed that have been abandoned

Second is exactly how you are taking care of the current batch you have

Is there a Fish & Game or Forestry Service you could ask if there is anything they could do? I think wild animals come under their jurisdiction even on private property, maybe they could help or at least advise?

Wow, thanks for all of the replies. Unfortunately, I can't try to fish out all of the basses because it is a community and you cannot fish without putting them back in the lake. I could call a fish and game service but we don't want to get in trouble with the Community Board. We also can't save all of them so I guess there's nothing else to do? We will try to do our part and hope for the best, but I wish there was more...
