Chickens are livestock, completely different then dogs.

To some, chickens are pets, and dogs are livestock, working animals, or food. Many animals are viewed very differently by different people or cultures (though in this case, the OP does view her dog as a pet). Just saying, there is merit to pointing out that there can be a double standard. I don't see people breeding pet pigs or horses, for instance, getting the same sort of reaction this thread did. The same goes with threads on people having babies, though some have the opinion that our foster system is plenty full and that our population is plenty large. The general sharing of this sort of information and opinions usually evokes a better reaction than taking it to a personal level, I think.

I've seen the same reaction a LOT, especially to horses!! Go on a horse forum and start talking about breeding randomly so that your mare can experience the joy of birth. The only plus side is that horses generally only have 1 foal while a dog can have many times that. There have been so many horses abandoned to just starve to death, esp since it's now illegal to slaughter them in the US.

Apparently I've started alot of negative attitudes on the op's original post..... I'm sorry Lacey, I wasn't trying to be rude at all. I was just trying to say its better to adopt than breed. Which is just a personal opinion. I probably shouldn't of even wrote anything in the first place. Sometimes I get so opinionated and set in my ways that I forget about what the other person may think. I do hope that everything goes well with the pregnancy and she has healthy pups.

Its ok I respect your opinion and I agree the dog population is outrageous but I also think its ok for people to breed their dogs IF they do it all planned out,and not just let their dog run the streets getting pregnant every time they are in heat.

And herein is where the problem lies. IMO... and only IMO, unproven dogs (that is dogs who have not produced champion offspring either in conformation or proven themselves in field work) and dogs that are not completely health tested should not be bred. This is a subject that goes straight to my heart. I volunteer for breed specific rescue, and people that have no business breeding dogs are creating dogs that are sick, have hereditary health problems, etc. Volunteer for a year in any rescue and I doubt anyone would want to breed again, unless it was done responsibly. People get rid of their dogs because,... they change their decor, they have a baby, they did not put the time into the dog as a puppy and now it's aggressive, the dog is sick, the dog needs surgery, the dog needs training, the dog isn't housebroken, etc etc.

Many people simply let their dogs go on the side of the road hoping that someone will pick them up. They get hit by cars, and picked up by animal control. If taken by animal control, their fate is pretty much sealed. They end up euthanized, and in a dumpster. This is where many breed specific rescues come into play. I honestly don't know how someone can dump their dog in rescue after 8 years. The dog's likelihood of being adopted is slim, and they usually spend the rest of their days in foster care... if breeding keeps being taken place by folks that have no business doing it, the breed will eventually not look like it's supposed to. That is why there is a breed standard.

I could go on and on... but I will instead stop here.

JM2C. No flames please.

Okay, I think the OP understands what some of us are concerned about...Enough is enough, the dog is already bred. Lets just get over it and wish her healthy and happy pups!
