Finally broke down and got a permit in Philomath, Oregon

After a neighbor started turning me in for crazy stuff, I decided it was time to get a permit for my girlies and I found out it really wasn't that big of deal. It's not even illegal to have a rooster but they are discouraged due to noise. The city manager buys farm fresh eggs from someone local and the city recorder has had chickens in 4H. I had to obtain 9 signatures out of 14 houses within a 200 yards of my house and that was it. Everyone was more than happy to sign and was very excited to hear I had them. I was invited into every home to talk about their experiences with chickens, lol. They, of course, hinted at wanting eggs and some even wanted to come over and see them. I wish every town was this easy. It really should be!

Did the permit cost you money? If so how much? How many chickens can you have? I may be moving to Philomath, Corvallis, or Albany.. Most likely not Albany though, you are only allowed to have 2 dogs in city limits.. I have 3 and I am not rehoming any of them..

I would LOVE to get a permit (and pay the yearly $25 fee) , but I don't meet the local setback requirements. I am therefore forced underground. Too bad for the city treasury.

Congrats on getting through the red tape! Did you happen to kill one of those Philomath wild turkeys for thanksgiving? I hear they have taken over your town

We have lots out here, too. They just don't come into town.

Sorry I just got back from CA. My mother passed away suddenly last week from cancer. It wasn't much, I believe $10 (I can't even find the thing at the moment to check, lol. There isn't any limit to how many chickens (though you do have to list how many and what kind) and they don't even say no roosters but they are "frowned upon".

When you apply for the permit, they give you a map and mark the houses within 200 yards of your property that you need to obtain 3/4 of signatures from. You turn it in, the city manager signs it and mails it back to you. It was really very simple. They can still make you get rid of your chickens if someone complains, but I haven't really heard of that happening. I live in the old section of town so no one had a problem with me having them. They actually thought it was pretty cool. In the newer housing developments, I've heard people are more picky.

I haven't had an overflow problem of eggs either, lol. My neighbors bring me empty cartons and I fill them up...still for free since I love my neighbors
