I've seen some large snapping turtles in Eagle Lake in Ontario (between Vermilion Bay and Dryden)... which surprised me... but apparently the cold isn't an issue for them.

Yeah, I'm guessing the mountains would have a lot to do with why you don't have them?

...Possibly?..I know down south we have box turtles and in Saskatchewan too..
