I FINALLY got my silkie [bantam] chicks!

I have been waiting and looking forever for them and out of all the places, our local Tractor Supply actually got shipment in! Of course, a friend of mine and I just HAD to go in together and get a few!

(NOTE: I would have preferred to get wood-chips for bedding, but unfortunately every store was either out or only had Cedar shavings... the straw is working out fine for now)

Here are my new babies:

They're straight run, so I'm not sure what the genders are. They are even way too young to be able to tell by the wind tip feathers (which I can't tell anyways), but yes, I'm very excited nonetheless! I absolutely love them!

I had "help" naming them from my friend's children, lol - Hey, the names compliment the silkie's fluffiness, right?

(the names are subject to change...)

Anyone have experience with this breed? I'm not sure if these are bearded or non, all the label said at the store was "Silkie Banties - Straight run." Is there a way to tell which kind they'll be as chicks? Any idea on what colors they'll grow up to be and if their color determines gender? In my past experience, if one chick was a darker shade than the other of the same breed, the darker one always turned out to be male... I know that these chicks are different colors in general, but just wondering if the "red" and "orange" are the same, just different gender, or if one is going to be solid and the other a splash - ???

I also got another Polish/Crested Dutch chicken from a friend to keep my B&W Crested hen company. My hen wasn't doing so well on her own in a flock of "normal-looking" chickens, so now I have a small "Polish United Front" - lol! They stick together and protect each other so things are going really well. Anyways, it's suppose to be a hen, but I really don't know. I haven't heard it crow and it acts "hen-ish" but the head feathers seem more pointy, granted they were kind of peck at (by other chickens from where she came from) and are growing back kind of awkwardly...so I guess we'll see. Anyways, assuming she's a girl, her name is Wynonna:

We decided to separate the "normal" hens from the "weird/exotic" ones. Once my silkies grow, they'll move in with the Polish.

Anyways, I'll keep updating this thread with their pictures. I'm very excited to watch them grow!

(Oops, sorry about the double post! Having a very 'glitchy' internet day...

Adorable babies! I've never had a silkie but think they are so neat looking.

We bought two different types of chicks when we picked ours out. Had a BR hen (only one) and didn't want her to feel left out if we got two chicks that were both the same but not BR. I think it's great that you got another Polish to keep yours company!

Had a small photoshoot with "MP"... Just in time for Easter. Marshmallow-Peep with a marshmallow peep - I can barely tell the difference!

So I had a "stupid moment" - today I was playing with my chicks and [finally] noticed their feet! I went into a momentary panic mode thinking "How could I have not noticed how deformed they were!" I thought I bought mutant chicks and then remembered that Silkies are suppose to have funky toes.... My little ones have 5 on each foot, so I guess they are perfect, LOL!

Anyways, I decided to play with my camera again and took a few pics of them. I mean come on, they're so cute right now and I like to sort of document their "growing up stages."

Anyways, here are some close ups:

^^^ Yeti (this one likes to run at my camera so I couldn't focus it very well, lol)

I know it's too early to tell, but any experts out there want to take a guess at genders?

Also, what colors do you think they'll end up being? Right now they're all getting their first wing tip feathers in and they all look white to a very pale cream color... I know that those could eventually change color...

Last question of the day, any idea if these are bearded chicks or non-bearded? I was told it's easier to tell RIGHT after the chick hatches and then again when they're start to molt into their adult feathers - I know right now they're just kind of completely poofy, but wasn't sure if someone has a trained-silkie chick eye, lol. The sign where I got them from didn't mention anything. I've really wanted beardeds for the longest time, but I'm so happy that I finally have beautiful silkie chicks in general, that at this point I don't really care so much - just kind of curious. They're gorgeous birds either way

Great pics!!! I had 2 white silkies. One's toenails got so long that she kept getting caught in stuff. They were both sweet little mamas. They are so pretty.
