We bought a 10ac farm almost 2 years ago. The house, barn, & septic system needed work so that's been our top priority. Now we're ready, & getting chickens in May!

My grandparents had a big farm when I was a child. My grandmother loved her Leghorn flock even though the rooster was a terror. I have fond memories from when I was 6-9 of being trusted to gather the eggs once the flock were turned out of the barn. They laid so many eggs I'd go out with the basket 2 or 3 times.

With that Leghorn rooster in mind, I've read about the nature of different breeds & have chosen the Favorelle. I'm looking forward to their tendency to be friendly, & not very flighty. I'm picking up 5 Salmon Faverolle hens to start with. My daughters want to learn how to care for them before getting chickens of their own. And one of my daughters is going to build the coop design I picked out this week.

I'm disabled so I work on genealogy, read a lot, & walk our acreage as much as I'm able with my rescue dog. He's been a great distraction from the pain & an incentive to walk a bit further to see what interesting thing he's discovered.

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

That's great your daughter will build the coop! We have forums that could help give her ideas and suggestions if she would want to join too. :)

We're glad you're here!
