I will rationalize by saying we are in an extreme drought and they haven't seen rain before...
 
When you cook all of your potato peels, let them cool, then chop them up to give to your chickens.

When you plant beets in the garden just so you can chop them up in the food processor to feed to the chickens.

When you grow more grain grasses than lawn so your free-range chickens have nutritious grass to eat all winter.
