finishing wood on coop/run

We repurposed a wood playhouse on our property into the coop....the walls of our run are complete just need to do the roofing panels (we did a modular system so we can easily disassemble and move if we need/want to). My question is: I need to do something to finish the wood and weatherproof it for winter...is there anything I shouldn't use??? Was thinking of using a stain.

I think stain is fine.

I used spray paint on the outside of my last coop, as well as brown stain. Never had any issues.

If you mean a stain, such as a deck stain, then that would work. Deck stain actually has a finish in it so that you are doing more than simply staining the wood.

I use paint, but then I have paint.
