Fire ants count as pests to me.

Very interesting. I wonder if the sugar was what did them in, or if it was the enclosed conditions (I am assuming the jars were sealed). IF conditions were just so, the sugar may have become food to certain bacteria of fungi and begun to ferment...yielding alcohol and CO2...both of which would have killed insects in enclosed conditions. (Pure assumption on my part of coarse...I'd love to try this in the yard, though.)

The other reports said it was getting rid of them in the yard. Here's a few more quotes. I still need to try it myself! These are all from Gardenweb, I hope they were right!

"I saw a garden show that said they used dry mollasses on a 4 acre site that was full of fire ant beds everywhere and the next day they were all gone. They said it repells them and they move to another area."

"O.K. I tried the white sugar bit on the massive ant bed I have under my onions in my raised bed. Yesterday just sprinkling the sugar on the bed brought them out in droves all over everything. Today they are much much more sluggish and much less of them than before. I am shocked because I thought I would just have fat ants."

"White sugar works!!!! 3 days after I put it around my onions on a massive ant bed they are gone g-o-n-e- gone!!! No trace and I am shocked. Who'd of thunk it.....sugar of all things...thanks jackie."

"White sugar worked for me too, I poured about a cup over a 3'x2' area. It took about 3 days for them to go. I don't know if they died or just relocated... but they aren't in my veggie garden anymore!"

"Someone here posted to put a 5 gal bucket over the mound, let it build up inside, carefully remove the bucket and then drench with molasses. I had dh cut the bottom off a 5 gal bucket and am going to try that, with the lid on. Then I don't have to disturb them any by removing the bucket, just take off the lid & fill with the molasses stuff."

I have 5lbs of white sugar and acres of fireants! I shall update you on my results! Having the same issue, free ranging chickens in the southern brutal summer - can't coop them all day. Need ants gone. Hubby is going to do a full yard treatment if this doesn't work :/

Last year I watered my garden once a week with a water and molasses drench. No more ants, they moved out and the plants love molasses. But it VAN attract other animals! I stopped after all ants were gone.

As far as keeping birds off the cornmeal...I use upside down milk crates. Covers mound but allows rain water.

So I took my sugar and went for a few fire ant hills.
I stopped because it started to rain :/ doh. Tho, the molasses is watered on so maybe it will be ok with the white sugar too...lol

Day one. Angry fire ants. Spread out mounds. Sprinkled 1/8 of a cup of Dominos white sugar across the tops. Walked away...and I wait. I feel like I just fed them. :( lol

That's exactly how I would feel. Thank you so much for doing this experiment for all of us!!!

I treated the mounds that I could find this morning. If it rains the others will pop up! I'm really hoping this works!

Hahaha.

So...I go down yesterday evening and check my piles. Sugars is still there.
I mess with the top to see if the swarm comes after me...a few angry buggers come out but not many. Might have been the time of day tho so going down shortly to check again.
BUT! now I have a trail of tiny black sugar ants trying to escape with my bait! Lol doh. I don't mind them (they love my potted plants but don't cause the damage or pain the fire ants do)

In our experience (which is that broadcasting combined with spot treatments as needed is what works), we have found that the fire ants seem to use the sugar ants (actually called "ghost ants") as "slaves", but the fire ant poison doesn't kill them, so... when the fire ants are dead, the ghost ants usually take over the mound. lol
A few angry buggers isn't characteristic of fire ants; I hope it means they're dead rather than just being the time of day!!!
