Fire Safety in your Chicken Coop & Barn - IMPORTANT!

Ajax, we just put in a outlet in the coop at the beginning of November, after seeing your loss DH is rechecking, he thinks he put in a GUCCI outlet . We put in a snap cover over the outlet and put it in 4 feet above the floor. I spent what I thought was too much money on outdoor over-sized cord to the heated dog bowl--glad I did now. I do sweep off the top of the light in there, feel the cord to make sure it's not warm or hot, and I keep a broom in both the coop and donkey stall and regularly sweep the down cobwebs and dust. Thank-you for making sure we all learn something for such a terrible loss. I'm checking my insurance for enough coverage, and I'm an assistant to two insurance guys-I should have known this

It is morbid, and it's the reason I am not staying at the scene.. because the insurance company removes the bodies, and it takes them a long time to figure it out. So there are a lot of bodies out in the rubble, and the house dogs find them.. and.. bring them to us.

Too much to take. (not the question - the dogs doing that).

It's really aggravating, how long it takes them.. I don't want to have to go and remove the bodies either though.

It's been 8 days since the fire and still haven't even got a quote for clean up, let alone a date they are going to start doing it.

Wow.
I would start calling the company, maybe every other day.
Good luck.

I am so glad that we live somewhere that we don't need heat in the buildings for the fowl. I don't have to worry about it. Because I have just this type of luck. I am worried about the brooders. I'm glad the bulbs will be on wire, and in a cinder block building.
If you read my list, it was not caused by heat lamps. It was caused by faulty wiring. If you have any electrical in the barn there is a risk. Make sure the electrical is done properly and is not overloaded.

We've been doing so pretty much every day (well I'm not, but it's being done).

Once we get the quote, it shouldn't take too long.

Beginning idea of the rebuild...

I'm drawing up barn plans. One floor only with the appearance of a loft, but no loft.. I don't want to take stairs anyway, and it would be too costly.

So this is the look we are going for outside. But bigger... All the doors will be double dutch style. More windows than in picture.

Hope this makes sense... I drew this out myself. I didn't like the plans that the image above showed. I need a really big area for the poultry, as well as breeding pens against the back for outdoor runs. I hope it brings it up larger when you click.. The long boxes against the wall are windows.. the doors are open. The little square boxes are outlets. Everything else is marked (except the lights in the 14 x 4 foot breeding pens (which by the way - 1 is supposed to be 6 x 14 feet.. whoops. Will have to fix it.

Thoughts? Did I mention all doors are double dutch style?
Hot water tank & Fuse panel will be in the tractor & storage area or the feed & wash area. Not sure exactly yet..

Pretty! Nice project to look forward to the start and completion of.

I love the dutch door my DH made for us.

I can hardly wait to see your photos go up on a new page!

Spring is coming, Spring is coming.

Aoxa ......... I'm just seeing this! I'm so sorry this has happened ....... my heart hurts for you! I was besides myself with grief when I lost one of my chickens to a hawk .......... a loss of this magnitude is unimaginable!! This makes me wonder if maybe I should be placing a monitor in the coop ....... if this might help should anything suspicious arise? Maybe I would hear the chickens making lots of noise. Like the monitors that new mothers use so they could hear if their infant wakes up. Maybe I'm overthinking this. I don't have a barn ...... just two coops that house 9 birds total ........... the only electricity is to the heated dog bowls for their water that I check everyday.

If I were you I would. For sure. Speckled hen does.

I was actually considering this just before because we had started to leave our LGD in with the sheep. We were worried someone would get hurt and considered it. Wish we had of. You can turn it to a low volume..

It would help with predators as well. You would hear if something was going on.

Thank you for your condolences. I am beside myself at times, but I'm trying very hard to hold it together and look toward the future. Of course the grief often rears it's ugly head at the worst of times.. Work is keeping me going.. and I am constantly occupying myself.

I have a baby monitor in my coop. Thus far, it has only really shown me when the girls wake up, but I think it's worth it to know if anything out of the ordinary is going on. :) Took me a while to figure out what sounds were normal at night, though. (I checked the cord on it, too, just after posting in this thread.)

Aoxa, your plans are beautiful! :D I'm excited for you!!
