We're chicken parents! We just brought home a trio of 7 day old Barred Rock chicks. Things are a little crazy for us right now - we're in the end stages of buying a house and one of the first orders of business is to build a gypsy vardo-looking coop for our motley gang. We've talked about getting egg-layers for some time, and now everything seems to just be falling into place.
First, I'm a vet tech and a client of ours brought her dog for a check up. It turns out, she takes in unwanted animals and re-homes them. And she has 3 egg laying chickens. Great! We bought her a bag of feed and she will keep them until we're ready to set them up in our new house! Then today we saw an ad on Craigslist for 3 Barred Rock chicks (one of my favorite breeds) and scheduled a pick up. We figured we could care for them warm and cozy and then by the time we're moved in, they'll be coop-ready!
We're so glad to have found this website and forums! Oh, the things we're learning! I know we'll have a billion questions in the coming weeks. Wish us luck!
