I have only heard a cluck that is fairly quiet. The picture KSKingBee posted is what to look for when a peahen is about to lay. Some hens will be more subtle about it. My Indian Blue peahen looks like this the day she will lay. Peahens usually lay at dusk or early morning. Sometimes they just can't hold it in any longer. The White peahen on the far left is about to lay as well.
Ive got one hen out of four I thought was going to lay her first egg and think she did but the other three more dominant may have eaten her egg as she is the runt and gets picked on constantly to the point Ive noticed they dont let her eat at times. She was walking around with her wings dropped as indicted in the segments above demonstrated by the pics but something happened as I didnt get up first thing that morning and she was not where she was the night before and the others were all over where she had been laying which lead me to believe the other ate her egg. Now I noticed she was dropping her wings again but having difficulty walking and is more of a wobble and almost falls down where she tries to walk making me think she is impacted or something is wrong and she has an egg broken in her and wont come out or its stuck, Ive separated her from the rest and she is eating but is having problems standing and appears weak and has little balance it seems , one of the others noticed something wrong and has been truing to get her attentions by bowing her head for preening and cocking her head around her looking at her as if she knows something is wrong with her sister. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do or just keep her separated and hope she is ok? They have all been recently treated for worms but is it possible she may have developed cicosis if thats how you spell it?
This is what I just found in my yard. It is a peahen's egg and it looks fertile. The problem is they are both only 10 months old. Everything I have read says that doesn't happen. Could another bird have fertilized the egg? We have turkey, chicken and Guinea.i also think it's a first egg do to the double yolk. Thanks in advance.
Can anyone describe if its normal for a pea hen to get weak when laying eggs or is it possible the egg is stuck inside her or broken inside her and she could possibly die if I dont do something?
Im guessing she was having a difficult time with her first egg or possibly second, I think the others ate her first one but sometime around noon she laid another egg which is my first. We left around 11 am for family dinner and just getting back and checking on her to see she has an egg in her nest, its a relief as I thought she was ill from something possibly. Should I let her keep her egg if she continues to lay on it or should I pick it up and put it in an incubator?
Yes but you said your pea hens are only 10 months old so there is no way possible they are mature enough to mate and being 10 months old there is also a significant size difference. When I bought my 4 females 2 yrs ago they were about the size of baby chickens just slightly bigger and able to fly very well as I found out quickly and almost lost one to the wild and all were a yellowish white and then 2 turned all white ( black shoulders) and 2 stayed stayed typical india blue heans, I now have one idia hen laying for the first time with the others soon to follow as my male has been mating with all of them.
